    Egg bound but...

These poor chickchicks :( I'm hoping I misdiagnosed her. I'd like to think she's just under the weather. Wishful thinking... Hate to see them like this. Hope the best for your girl <3

    Egg bound but...

2 yr old ISA Brown, named "#5" has been laying less frequently however, eggs are very large and thick towards the tip of the egg. Last 48 hrs she's been lethargic... Standalone sunbathing, pale comb and closing her eyes (haven't seen the penguin stance yet). Today I inspected the vent and...

What time do I open the coop door?

I work two weeks of days and two weeks of nights, rotating, 12 hr shifts. If I work days, the coop door is open at 0530. If nights, opens up about 0730, when I get home. Sometimes I don't get the coop open til noon. They'd rather be out and about, judging the pile of chickens at the run door...

    Chick sexing ISA, EE, Brahma

The roo I have now was splotchy but it was the attitude that gave him away early. Same with the white one. I can tell by the mannerisms that he's a he. Just not sure with the brown chick. The gray one is a late bloomer but I'm thinking that's a characteristic of a larger bird (the "Americana")...

    Chick sexing ISA, EE, Brahma

You and I are on the same page. Thank you for the confirmation and ego stroke. I was thinking there were some kind of sex link traits because one came out white and the other chipmunk. Especially when considering they are both ISA brown crosses.

    Chick sexing ISA, EE, Brahma

I have and crossed one easter egger rooster X 4 ISA Browns, two light brahmas and an easter egger hen that lays a blue egg. One brahma was broody so I hatched one day's lay... one brahma egg, one blue ee egg and four ISA brown eggs under the broody light brahma. Of the six eggs, five hatched...

    Grit vs Oyster Shell Question

If you have a run you could use crush and run on the ground... Or church up a lawn ornament and border with some crush and gravel. I just paid 35 dollars for a half-ton of it but you can buy by the bag at Lowe's or home Depot.

Comment by 'Back 30' in article 'Overbuilt not overpriced Brooder'

Thanks for checking it out! I've made a few mods as time has gone on but it's mostly the same. Now that they are bigger and more comfortable with being fed by hand, the eager birds fly out and try to get first dibs when it's snack time! Layering the bottom with cardboard was clutch when it came...

I've heard 1 for every three laying hens. But I'm just starting out and had the same question.

Is it probable to file back for a better fit of the upper and lower beak or should I only file when necessary.

Have you raised him from a cockerel and does his beak look similar?

    Please advise... Cross beak

Thank you! I've got a bit of veterinary experience and know that a painless trim is waaaay better than hitting the quick even if it's only once!!

    Please advise... Cross beak

With what do you file? I could imagine toenail clippers for the dog/cat and rabbit but a nail file (Emory board)/ Dremel seems like it would be very stressful. Right now she is getting chick crumbles, chopped veggies and some playtime in a covered run. Do you only file when you notice chips or...

    Please advise... Cross beak

I have a 5 wk. old Easter egger that has a beak deformity. We picked out the chicks one for one and even though I noticed it, we still accepted the girl. I've seen chicks make it to adulthood with and among other deformities, due to losing power to incubators so, I thought nothing of dropping a...
