I have a feeling it’s a cockerel too, but I am not experienced enough to say why. Can you elaborate?
Of the 7 chicks that hatched, it seems to me that ALL of them are cockerels. This one is the smallest by far, so I’m trying to better learn what clues to look for.
I recently let my broody buff Orpington hatch a clutch of eggs, and while she did a pretty good job of making sure all the eggs were hers, clearly she mixed in one of our barred rock hen’s eggs.
I had two roosters in my flock: a big Rhode Island Red, and my little bantam White Crested Black...
I am posting here because I’m having a bit of a mental breakdown and feel like I need to talk to other chicken people right now.
Ive had my flock for a year and a half, and recently let my broody buff orpington hatch a clutch (we have a rooster). A week ago today, we had 7 live hatchlings, and...
It’s better to show you than to tell you. 😂
She (maybe he) is almost 17 weeks now, and really REALLY hates if her/his brother crows: Teenage silkie is the Crow Police
This is my bantam Polish rooster, Poo. He is 16 weeks old. I noticed he was a little sluggish yesterday but blamed the heat. This morning he wouldn’t come out of his coop to join his 11 siblings. Didnt crow. Didn’t come when I brought breakfast, finally came out and just wants to lay still in...
Thanks so much for this! Great article.
Ok so the run was expanded yesterday and it’s now 25x15. I left a dividing piece of fence that essentially splits it down the middle, with a small gate that stays open during the day so all have access to both sides of the run. So essentially I could just...
Ohhh that is not the coop actually! That was our “brooder coop.” Nonetheless, if you’re saying they are all going to go into one coop regardless, I guess I now have 3 useless coops!
Hi! First time chicken keeper here, making many mistakes.
I have a mixed flock of 12 (of which 3 turned out to be roos). They’re all between 13-16 weeks. When I first got them, they all fit nicely into the coop (not a “stand up” coop). However, now that they’re getting bigger, I bought a second...
That is my fear. My husband, who grew up on a farm, is trying to prepare my mindset for the fact that some animals just don’t make it, and that’s part of this whole endeavor. Thanks so much for your kind advice. Fingers crossed for my Cady girl.
Thank you so much for replying, I’m so new at this and very nervous to do anything wrong! I’m attaching a few photos of my little Cady. I am relieved to hear it is likely not worms. She does keep pasting up, which worries me and is keeping me wiping bird butt intermittently through the day!
She...
New chicken mom. I was sure my little frizzle/silky (sizzle?) was going to die two nights ago, but gave electrolytes and this morning she’s much more active and eating but still not as active as the others. I am trying to get her to continue to improve, did a full cleaning and sanitizing of...
The electrolytes do seem to be pepping her up a bit. She spent about 10 minutes playing a little bit and hopping around, which is the first time I’ve ever really seen her do that since we brought her home Wednesday. She also jumped into the feeder and ate happily for a few minutes. I scooped her...
I woke up on this Mother’s Day morning asking my husband to go look in the brooder tent because I didn’t want to see Cady passed (hubby grew up on a farm so
I woke up on this Mother’s Day morning and asked my husband to go check the brooder because I didn’t want to see Cady passed (hubby grew...
Hi! New to BYC and want to introduce my babies.
We moved to the remote Nevada desert after spending our lives on the east coast (Florida, Connecticut and Pennsylvania). A friend of ours gave us a home-hatched chick a month ago, and we decided he (she?) needed company. So we got 4 more from TSC 2...
