Thank you for the reply! She has lost throat feathers, too. I don’t have a rooster. I give them a layer feed (16% protein). Thanks for the advice about boosting protein.
Hello! I have a hen who is looking really scruffy. She’s old enough to molt, and I just read some of the pages about molts and how to tell the difference between a molt and signs of parasites (like mites), but I’m still not sure.
My concern is that it looks like the feathers are being...
Hi— I have my first chicken coop, and am using the deep litter method (with a mix of hemp and wood shavings). I’m interested in opinions on whether the litter looks normal for its stage, or not.
I have 7 hens in a coop with attached run (no free ranging). The coop (where I have the deep...
Thank you! I really appreciate your comments. I’m in California, USA: hot-hot summers, mild winters. For ventilation, I also have all soffits open (predator-proofed with hardware cloth), the peak of the run-side wall is vented, and I have a fan that kicks on over a certain temp. or humidity...
Hello! My family and I built our dream chicken coop and run, which took about 6 months of weekends. It’s the biggest thing we’ve built, and we learned a lot. I wanted to share progress photos! You might notice I did my level best to copy parts of the Carolina coop. :)

It was definitely pricey. I thought I was paying a premium for sure-bet hens… silly me. If you or anyone has recommendations for good hatcheries, I’d love a recommendation. These are my first hens, but won’t be my last. I’m located in CA, USA.
I got her from mypetchicken.com— I’m not sure what method they use. But so far, two other supposedly female chicks have turned out to be roosters, so I’m definitely not getting the “95% accuracy” they claim. Sigh.
I’ll try to get a better shot!
