Other than Egg Bound, what would cause a chicken to walk like a penguin?

I have a Red Star hen that has been walking like a penguin for more than 2 weeks. Abdomen feels distended. She's eating and drinking and poop is a mixture of runny and soft. If she was egg bound she'd be dead already. What could be the cause? I haven't felt inside the vent yet as it would be...

    Possible frostbite on rooster's wattle?

If the lower half of the wattle falls off, will it grow back? Thanks for the replies. A little less concerned now.

Miserable adult hen with a dirty ass

I have this hen with pasty butt/vent gleet. I cleaned her off with water and a towel a few days ago but she's a mess again. She's very lethargic and looks miserable. The vent itself doesn't look blocked. She just stands there with her eyes closed. I did some research and it seems there is little...

    Possible frostbite on rooster's wattle?

I have a rooster that has a black patch on his wattle. Today, I noticed it's starting to split a bit. Could someone confirm? I'm surprised because it's not cold here in southern Japan but we have had some minus 2-3C nights lately. And any insights to what can be done and what would happen if...

Ended Official BYC Contest—Post Your Best (Worst) Chicken Molt Pictures - 2023

One of my Red Star hens. We have 25 of them and they don't have names. Only been keeping chickens for 2 years and this is the first hard molt I've seen.

    Severe feather loss

I just posted a few pics. Do you think it could just be molting? She has 14 sisters and some molted just a few feathers on the wings. This hen is losing feathers everywhere, including chest and stomach.

    Severe feather loss

I've never seen a chicken molt like this. Although I'm relatively new to the game (2 years). Normally it's just a few feathers. Here's a few pics.

    Severe feather loss

We have one hen that looks in bad shape. She has lost at least 50% of her feathers. This hen brooded for a long time and did a poor job. One egg hatched but we found the chick dead. Nothing else hatched so she just sat there for 6 weeks. In the end, we had to force her out, take the eggs, and...

    Homemade Feed Recipe

@U_Stormcrow in this thread we came up with a post-apocalypse feed that is rice, wheat and soybeans with oyster shell and seaweed. If I was to feed this to chicken do I need to cook the rice first? If not, do I feed them white rice or the unpolished husked grain? Thanks!

    Rice Hulls for Mealworms?

I get free rice hulls being here in Japan. I live in an agricultural area where many people grow their own rice (me included). You can just pull the truck up outside the back and pull the lever. I raise mealworms too. I think rice hulls would work. Would just need to spin them up in a food...

What can I temporarily sub for chicken feed?

Can chickens not eat onions? There are always onion scraps (raw) in the food scrap bin I feed to my chickens every 3 days.

Absolutely stunning. Maybe one day I'll build something as magnificent. Great write-up too!

15 new pullets not sleeping in the coop with the flock

The coop is in a field about 5 minutes drive away so not as easy as all that. Plus the coop doesn't have a door to the run, just an open door-sized hole. So if I put them in I'm sure they'll just bail as soon as I go to get another one. If I don't intervene will they eventually go in by themselves?

15 new pullets not sleeping in the coop with the flock

Generally, yes. But occasionally a hen will be mean and go looking for trouble. The younger pullets are small and fast and easily run away.

15 new pullets not sleeping in the coop with the flock

It's starting to get cold at night here in southern Japan so for sure that's why they are huddling together.

    Help integrating new chickens

Having similar issues. Added 15 new pullets to existing flock of 15. The new girls won't sleep in the coop. I don't have a door on the coop as the run is predator safe. The new 15 huddle on the floor or up in a tree.

15 new pullets not sleeping in the coop with the flock

Our original flock is 14 hens and one rooster. They are about 7 months old. We bought another 15 chicks (all hens) and introduced them to the flock when they were about 3 weeks old. This was 3 weeks ago. We partitioned a section of the run to keep them separate for a week and then let them out...

    Homemade Feed Recipe

Interesting. I could definitely get some kind of oil press. Could even make sunflower oil from it.
