    Weird neck shaking

She withheld food and water until this morning and all but one had empty crops. She isolated the one with a puffy crop and gave her water. Her crop seems to be getting smaller. She’s been massaging her crop during the day and can hear a little gurgle when she does. Gave them yogurt, egg yolk...

    Weird neck shaking

Asking for a friend. Three days ago she noticed one of her chickens (all barred rocks a little over a year old) doing an odd circular, bobbing head movement. Yesterday two more chickens starting doing the same head movements. Today she heard sneezing. She checked their crops thinking maybe it...

9 week old buff Brahma pullet or cockerel?

We love our Banana man. He really is the sweetest but he is no where near average buff Brahma rooster weight! He weighs 3.8 lbs, a little over a year old. His beak and one wing is crooked. Plus found this today, feels like a nail growing out of his chest.

Breaking broody in 6 degree F. temperature

Deer no longer goes in the nesting boxes, none of them do, but she is picking her belly feathers out. I don’t know how long her belly has been bare but it seems like she pulls a ton of feathers out. I don’t see any bugs but I will try looking again tomorrow. Is this something that happens after...

Breaking broody in 6 degree F. temperature

Yesterday I got a crate and set up a spot in the coop for her, blocking off her view of the nests. As soon as I put her in the cage my normally sweet chicken attacked her through the cage bars. Before I had put her in jail, a girl got too close and Deer (the Barnevelder) puffed up, spread out...

Breaking broody in 6 degree F. temperature

Sunday through Tuesday lows 14-25 then it drops to single digits. I can bring her into the garage (65 degrees) if needed. I can block off the nests but the coop has shavings on the floor. I have a brooder heating plate I could possibly use. So far she seems to be acting normal today, hoping it...

Breaking broody in 6 degree F. temperature

I have a 7 month old possibly broody Barnevelder who wouldn’t leave the nesting box today, growls when anything comes near. I took her out and had her eat and drink but she went right back to the box. I removed her two more times and set her on the roost (it’s dark around 5pm here) but she...

    Is splitlip hempnettle poisonous?

Noticed the chickens are working on a patch of what I think is splitlip hempnettle. Anyone know if it’s poisonous to chickens? I’ve read chickens avoid eating poisonous plants but I wanted to make sure.

9 week old buff Brahma pullet or cockerel?

Thanks everybody. I’ve had my suspicions for awhile. Banana is my 7 year olds favorite. I wasn’t prepared to have a rooster but we will try having a rooster this go around 😊 I’ll post an updated photo this fall.

9 week old buff Brahma pullet or cockerel?

Banana is our 9 week old buff brahma, bought her from the local feed store and was told they order from Cackle Hatchery. Questioning the red wattles and comb. She is friendly with us but a jerk to the rest of the ladies, always chasing and pecking them, occasionally pinning their neck down...

    Blue Australorp?

Here is Big Boo, our Blue Australorp. Compared to photos I’ve found on BYC she does not look like one? Any ideas? She is about 5 weeks old. Last two photos are Big Boo around 4 days old
