Aloha,
First time raising coturnix and already in love with them. I have guesses on what these colors might be, trying to match with internet pictures. Could you all confirm or guess what these colors might be? They are only two weeks old right now, I'm just excited lol.
Aloha,
Any guesses or insight into what these colors might be? They are only 10 days old, I'm just excited lol.
I'm pretty sure the "B"s are jumbo whites and the "C"s are tuxedos, not sure about "A" or "D" though though.
Location could have an influence as well. Here in Hawaii, the standard price ranges seem to be:
2-4$/ea for hatching eggs
10-12$/ea for day old chick, unsexed
10$ for Male at point of maturity
20$ for Hen at point of lay
Warning, my update is unfortunate at best. Everything was going great, the Shetland chicks were all friendly and thriving. I put them out in the big coop with the Barnies at ~8 weeks. They were quite a bit smaller, but they all got along well. Flock master adopted them as his own, teaching...
Awesome, thank you! I hope to breed more, trying combinations of the 2 pure hens and roos. I'll look to bring in some new blood from GFF, or other, in the future too.
The gold variety is quite beautiful as well!
No, I didn't reach out to the breeder. Mostly b/c its a big island, but very small community; I don't want to make any ripples. I did elect not to order from them again and instead import from Greenfire Farms to build the rest my core flock though.
5 of the 7 roos were definitely hybrids...
Aloha,
3/5 Silver Barnevelder hens have started laying! They all prefer the corner right next to the nesting boxes instead of inside them.
I've tried fake eggs, higher and lower, with and without curtains, but they still like that one spot. Any ideas to help make the nesting boxes more...
Everyone is growing up fast! Here are some more progress pics. Real feathers are coming in now at 4.5 wks. I'm guessing 5 cockerels, 7 pullets at the moment and would be very happy with that ratio if it comes to fruition. Basing my gender guesses on big tails and tufts = cockerel.
OMG and...
Cool, thank you!
With that determination, there are 7 cockerels and 5 pullets total in there right now (600 sq ft.). They all grew up together and are getting along, for now. I'm planning to pick the best two Barnevelders and then process the other 5 roos at 6 months.
I ordered SDL Barnevelders from a local breeder but wound up with a few hybrids mixed in (believed to be Wyandotte X Barnevelder).
One of the hybrids, labelled "B" in these pictures, I am sure is a rooster- hes got the complete look and crows...
The other, labelled "A", has similar back cape...
Oh neat! I love the golden duckwing coloration, but am most hoping for some black/silver birchen, it looks so elegant to me
Here they are all lined up, GFF sent an extra 2 chicks and all 12 are vigorous thus far
