hen having trouble passing broken egg- Day 3 now

If anyone out there has any other advice on this, please write! Petrie is still acting the same- not interested in food or water. I give her water with a dropper on the side of her beak 2-3 times a day, and also Poly visol drops. She mostly stands hunched over- seems to be extruding less broken...

Help a dog just got my chicken

I've read if you do use neosporin, don't use the pain relief kind- something in it is not good for chickens.

hen having trouble passing broken egg- Day 3 now

Thanks for the tip, azygous- I will definitely try. She's still doing the same thing this morning- I will massage her a little, and then sometimes a squirt of egg will come out- yolk and egg mixed up together :( I hope she'll get it all out soon!!!

hen having trouble passing broken egg- Day 3 now

It seems the egg is coming out little by little today. Petrie mostly just lays there and when she stands up a little squirt of it comes out. Does anyone know if there's anything I can do for her to help it come out? Or should I just let it take it's course. Now when I massage her, I can't really...

hen having trouble passing broken egg- Day 3 now

Hi there, We are having a rough chicken week- we had 5 last Saturday, and now only 1 is left due to a major predator attack. I am planning to find a new home for the one remaining chicken so she has company- it's so sad to be the only one left and she just seems confused and doesn't quite know...

    mangled comb: remove or keep?

Thanks for the advice. And I definitely saw they can bleed a lot this morning. I am trying to figure out the best way to wrap it?? The awkward shape and the fact that there are two cuts makes me think the wrap will not stay on very well. I tried using a butterfly bandaid to hold it in place and...

    mangled comb: remove or keep?

Last night we had a break-in. Something got into our coop and killed two hens, and injured two more. The third surviving hen (we had 5 in total) has no visible injuries but has been acting in shock all day. Whatever it was ate parts of the dead hens- but not that much- and left. We found the...

    Will cats kill Chickens?

I have two cats that live at my house and more than I can count that roam the neighborhood and I've never had a problem. I've even seen some of my braver chickens chase away a cat that came too close! So, in my experience, cats are afraid or indifferent to chickens for the most part. I am sure a...

    Recurring Crop Issues-Dark Liquid Discharge

OK- I am not holding my breath but maybe someone can help here. Butters is doing ok and drinking lots of water- she ate yogurt with rolled oats that had been processed into a powder. Her crop is still very liquidy- and I definitely think she's had sour crop starting in. The thing is, every time...

Easiest way to Cull a chick?

So sorry to hear you're having to do this. I have never culled a chick, but I know that people do cull chickens by simply pulling their head off. I know it could sound gruesome, but with a chick this might be an easy enough way and you will know that she will die instantly. You will, however...

    Recurring Crop Issues-Dark Liquid Discharge

Thanks, HaulnFetch. I will look this up. I am starting to think I might try to save some of the liquid that comes up out of her to take to the vet for a test. My room-mate and I flushed out her crop again this afternoon, and there was a lot of liquid in it again, plus some food she must have...

    Recurring Crop Issues-Dark Liquid Discharge

I posted about my chicken, Butters, having some crop issues about a month ago. I treated her for about a week and she seemed better so out she went with the rest of them again! (See this post for more details on the first incident: www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=452845) She has...

Do I REALLY need to worm?

I will chime in because I just had a consultation with Peter Brown- aka the Chicken Doctor- (http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/) about another issue but I also asked him about worming. He told me that there are no real regulations on how long you should really withhold the eggs after worming...

Chicken seizuring and throwing up- Now suspect sour crop- question!

Sorry I haven't posted in a couple days! This week has gotten busy. But I have been watching Butters and giving her a dropper of ACV water every morning and evening. She has been recovering well as far as her crop and eating issues go- yesterday she finally started eating more normally! I food...

    The truth about chickens

Quote: This is so true! You have to be prepared at any time to drop everything else or reschedule things to take care of a wounded or sick chicken. and of course it will be the day when you are already late for work and had plans that evening. (last Wednesday for me!) not to mention calling...

Sounds silly... but what's the best way to catch/pick up my chickens?

Quote: So I have a question- do chickens really like being petted? or is that anthropomorphizing them? I can definitely see that they would learn to associate treats with being fed, and so they would like that. But it doesn't seem like a chicken normally gets stroked or petted in her natural...

Chicken seizuring and throwing up- Now suspect sour crop- question!

So this morning I checked on Butters and she is still looking alert and walking around the crate. She pooped last night and it is starting to look less grainy- although now I think that could also be because she has't been eating much outside of the mush and crumbles I am feeding her. She's...
