Hmm 🤔 Is this a calcium deficiency?

Thank you for the detailed reply! Thinking about them possibly working through some sort of illness but remaining asymptomatic; some nutri-drench in their waterer certainly wouldn't hurt.

Hmm 🤔 Is this a calcium deficiency?

Thanks @rosemarythyme, I figured as much but also figured it wouldn't hurt to hear from the more experienced owners on here such as yourself just to make sure. Have a great day! 😊

Hmm 🤔 Is this a calcium deficiency?

Walked out to the coop and found this on the ground by the door away from the nesting boxes. It appears to be an albumen, yolk and membrane but all out of order and with zero signs of a shell whatsoever. I couldn't pick it up by hand because it was gonna break open, so I shoveled it up instead...

    Selling chicken eggs

Definitely up those prices. Around here, the Vital Farms eggs hit $9/doz!! before coming back down slightly. Last I looked, decent store bought eggs were around $6/doz and holding steady.

Crap. I found the remains of an egg today.

I feed them all-flock pellets and do provide calcium (oyster shell) by throwing it out in their run so they can scratch around for it as is their natural behavior. I'm happy to report that after about a week I haven't found any more egg remains, so it sounds like a soft-shelled egg was the...

Crap. I found the remains of an egg today.

@Squawkers I'm sorry, I forgot to address your other question; yes I am sure no other animal got in the coop. I had a coon get in there once but I killed it. The only other thing I've ever seen in there was some rat droppings which ceased when I started bringing the feeder in at night. Never...

Crap. I found the remains of an egg today.

I've considered this. Installing a camera permanently would be a bit of a technical problem (I can explain this in more detail if desired) and I'd have to source power to the coop camera as well. A temporary camera could be made to work though. For all the other replies... thank you for the...

Crap. I found the remains of an egg today.

Hello all! I've searched and read several threads on here and I'm sorry if I missed the one with the relevant information for me. I have a rooster, 2 laying hens and 4 pullets, at least one of which has begun to lay. Today I looked in the nesting boxes and found a wet spot. Closer examination...

Both my adults stopped laying. Do you see anything awry?

Okay thank you @DobieLover and @sourland. My previous Barred Rock laid like a champ through her second winter before being killed by a predator attack the following spring so for whatever reason I was thinking perhaps the mild winters here wouldn't stop them from laying over winter. But yes...

Both my adults stopped laying. Do you see anything awry?

Hi @DobieLover! I had considered that and forgot to mention that I actually haven't had that problem before! Doesn't mean it's not the case now, I am not doubting your assessment at all! Those two didn't completely stop last winter, could it just be because they are older now?

Both my adults stopped laying. Do you see anything awry?

Good morning y'all, I hope everyone is enjoying this Sunday morning! I have a flock of seven at the moment which are four pullets around 20 weeks old a mutt of a rooster who's probably around a year old. Don't know for sure, he was given to me. two 1.75 year old Easter Eggers that currently do...

    Barred Rock Chicks

Yes, but you'll probably have to partition off your run for a week or so. That way they can get used to seeing each other but not pick a fight. After that, I would do the same with the (now 2) Barred Rocks, that is, put them in the partition area and let the older hens get to know them. After a...

Pullets hanging out in nesting box

Hey y'all! I just wanted to close this thread out and say that as the pullets matured into adults, they eventually all quit going in the nesting boxes except to do their thing and lay eggs. I did add a divider in the nesting box so that now I have two boxes. This did nothing for the original...

How often to change the litter in the brooder cage

You just have to raise their water dish some, and make sure they can't roost on or directly above it. Raising it to be level with their backs should do, chickens can stretch their necks impressively far.

Pullets hanging out in nesting box

As long as this resolves with age as @AnnPann mentioned, I can deal with it until they mature in a few months. More nesting boxes... hmm yeah, I think I'll add a divider or two and turn my one long nesting box into two or three, and maybe add a curtain on it too so the peeps can have some privacy.

Coop in full sun, heat issues

I'm in west central Florida, 90's is the temperature in the SHADE during our summers and the heat index can be 100 or more. The important question here is what breeds do you have? You can Google your breeds and see how heat-tolerant they are. For ventilation just create openings everywhere you...

Pullets hanging out in nesting box

I've heard and/or read about blocking the nesting box(es) off at night but I'm more concerned with them hanging out in there during the day. At night the pullets usually all sleep on the roost bars with the adult. Tonight she (my adult) pecked a couple of them off the roost bars and one of them...

    Rooster attacked me

@esme13 You're making the right decision. The reality is that, like animals, poultry needs to be managed in a way that results in the best outcome for all involved and sometimes that means bad behavior = freezer camp or dirt nap. I just had to put a laying hen down because she wouldn't stop...

Pullets hanging out in nesting box

@AnnPann Thanks! It's good to hear they'll get over it. Yeah they like to kick all the bedding out and I was initially afraid they'd kick a real egg out which would splat on the ground and then they'd all discover how tasty eggs can be, but so far this hasn't happened.
