Hi all:
This is a tough one. I was/ am in the same boat. I used a cup version and would freeze so i switched over to the same nipple design you did and saw a similar issue where the hens seemed that they were not getting enough water so since it is cold in my area or the twenties, and...
Hi All"
The temps in SEPA (South Eastern PA) dropped into the single digits and the hens were a little cold but just fine overall. As many folks in previous posts have said that as long as the coop and run is dry and well vented at the top the ladies should be fine. My only issue my water...
Hi 2x 4 are plenty. I live in South Eastern PA and lived in Upper NJ before that so your design will work great. I just saw the video you made of the completed run....very nice. Cheers!
Hi Fill dirt this is in the run consists of a mixture of broken down rocks, clay and sand. It contains little fertility for plants to grow, or any organic matter and can create small, light particles of dust which make it easy for a chicken to spread around on or under their feathers and wings...
Hi:
I think your first game plan is the best one. "I'm planning on putting down a layer of sand, and then putting down a new layer of soil." I recommend before you do that is sample a few other areas on your property and see if it is consistent and averages out. An bed of 3-4 inches of sand...
Hi:
Using strong-smelling plants, spices, and other scents can help deter chickens from hanging around close to your home. Chickens do not like powerful smells. Some scents are more offensive to chickens than others. Once chickens get close enough to the spice scent (and if it’s strong enough)...
Hi, I used crumbles for the baby chicks up to 6 weeks or until I finish the 50 lbs bag. Then I went to pellets to reduce the waste. I have never used Cluck & Co but I do see it is organic so I would believe if you can get it for a fair price then you will be good. As fore the rentAcoop...
Hi I believe with the combination of your 8" cinder blocks and predator apron (at least 24 inches) will just work great. Good Luck and make sure you post your birds and your continued progress on your coop and run. Cheers!
Thank you all for the feedback and comments. By no means this is the final result. I came up with the feed and percentages as a start to this topic and open the discussion. Again, thanks and keep the feedback coming. I am still interested to hear if there are others who are making there own...
Hi All:
I am new to homesteading but I have spent a good amount of time researching so I can make my own feed for my ladies. Is anyone doing the same? If so, what are your mixes with feed type, weight an/ or percentage to the total.

Hi:
Yes, when you have new chicks you need to follow the following recommended temperature for chickens with a heat lamp or brooder heat plate:
Hatch through Week 1 - 95 degrees F
1-2 Weeks - 90 Degrees F
2-3 Weeks - 85 Degrees F
3-4 Weeks - 80 Degrees F
4-5 Weeks - 75 Degrees F
Good Luck...
Hi yes, sorry, both are cockerels. I just started this year as well. I bought my first set of chicks in June from Murray McMurray Hatchery online and received them on August 16th 2022. I have a total of 6 chickens; 2 WHITE Rocks, 2 Rhode Island REDs, and 2 BLACK Australorps. Don't give up...
Hello yes, I would highly recommend an apron as well. I have one around the perimeter of my coop and run which is HWC that is 36" wide stapled to the base of the run and coop. Cheers!
