I am new to the world of peafoul. I had a peacock show up on my property almost a year ago and he has stuck around. I’m pretty attached to him at this point, so I would like to build him an enclosure to keep him safe and get him some girlfriends. I am busy doing all the research that I can, but...
Thanks guys! Bummer about ??. S/he is so unique and pretty. I REALLY hoped it was a hen. Oh well, at least I got one hen out of the bunch. The BRs are pretty easy to tell.
Well the roos have a nice place to go so they'll be leaving shortly. NO idea on possible parents for ??. So anyones guess...
After searching the posts on sexing chicks, I'm pretty sure I have at least two Roos (lighter/silvery colored barred rocks) and one hen BR (since she's darker and her comb is not red yet.
The other one, I'm not so sure about. These hatched out on April 22nd, and from the posts on sexing young...
Thanks again! I ended up needing to move them this afternoon. Mama was in the favorite nesting box and the BR kept knocking down the partition I put up trying to get into the nest. There werent any issues when the chicks were around the other hens but I moved them all anyway since it made me...
Thank you for responding! I read on here you should move them at night so they arent as startled. So I will plan on moving them tomorrow night unless there's a problem tomorrow with the other hens. Unless you or others chime in and dont think it will matter when they are moved.
How high off the...
My broody banty has been setting on fertile eggs and I was anticipating a hatch on Sunday or Monday however they came early! I went to check on mama this morning and saw two fuzzy butts and a still wet baby.
Since then, all four have hatched and are fuzzy and peeping and staying under mama.
I...
I'm actually afraid I have twins right now under a broody hen. I see two dark spots moving around in different directions. If it does turn out to be twins, should I move the egg to an incubator to increase the chance of at least one hatching? Or, should I leave it alone with mama? This is my...
Thank you!
I have 4 nesting boxes and 3 hens...I always thought that was more than enough. And I candled the eggs tonight and still only 5 eggs.
Thoughts??
Update: I checked my non-laying barred rock hen to see if she was egg bound and does not appear to be. She does hoever have LOTS of same sized pin-feathers on her belly from neck to vent and even under her wings. So maybe she is molting? And toward the back half of her belly it's very red with...
Hi there! I have a VERY broody hen! She was adament about hatching something...golf balls, rocks and I even caught her sitting on some gum-balls from my neighbors gum tree!
I tried putting her in "time out" with no nesting box, I tried booting her out of the nest every time she went in...so...

if s/he is a roo...at 5 months old...when would I hear the first crow? I'm in Saint Louis, close to the city so I need to act quick if its a roo. My neighbors on my quiet residential street already think I'm crazy!
Thanks for all the help! Here are some additional pictures to help decide the fate of poor "Francine" who, now...may become Frank...
And one more of Maude for good measure.
thanks again!!
Thanks everyone! This may be a dumb newbie question but...what are saddle feathers? I assume they are near the rear? lol
Could you let me know and I will look closer tomorrow when there is light. Can't have a roo in St.Louis....
Nevermind found a thread on saddle feathers....CRAP!!! I'll...
This is the best pic I could get in a hurry. The rust colored one is starting to get feathery tufts around the ears. I'll post more pics tomorrow and see if I can get better shots. They are supposed to be pullets about 4 months old I got them the day before Thanksgiving. Thanks in advance for...
I lost two of my three backyard chickens in the last week. I only have one poor girl left and dont want her to get lonely!
Will pay $5 per hen for layers 2 years or older and will pay $10 per hen for layers up to 18 months old.
I'm located in Affton, MO and will pickup within a 50 mile radius.
