I can do that with the work light and simply turn it off when I close the door at night. Thanks.

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

I don't have a light in there, but I've wondered if it might be a good idea. Is chicken sleep affected by a light? lol Do I need to get a fire-resistant lamp, or will a clip-on work light do?

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

The problem is possibly solved! The Rooster used the "WHAT IS THAT COLD SCARY WHITE STUFF?" path I made for him to get the 3 feet from inside the chicken run to the coop door without having to touch the snow with his little feet. Tonight only 1 chicken was in the run and the rest were in the...

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

I think I found at least part of the problem. The ROOSTER is afraid to walk on the snow! I made a path with boards and shavings and he made it to the chicken run. He was SO hungry! I blocked off the pallet, so we’ll see what happens when it’s dark! Currently all chickens present and accounted...

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

Lol. I’ll try to make them a dry path to see if they are snow-averse.

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

Thank you. You know, I got the chicks before I was quite ready because someone had to get rid of their whole flock. I’m not certain of their age, but I’m pretty sure it’s the young adults gone off by themselves. They are all female and I have 1 rooster who stays in the coop at night. I might...

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

They are walking around in the snow. I might go clear a little path to make sure all of them have a clear way to the coop entrance. It might be high enough to be intimidating.

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

Thanks. Going by the body temperature of the ones I moved into the coop last night, they are toasty warm and in the same place as the food and water. I thought about leaving the coop door open, in case they wanted to go in in the middle of the night, but once they've huddled together, they...

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

I swept feet of snow off the top of the coop, added another bag of shavings, checked the chickens. They all seem fine, but even during the day they ALL like to go under the pallet that's holding the coop. They can get under there from the chicken run. Weird.

Chickens staying out at night below freezing

3 of my chickens are huddling under the pallet their coop is on and 3 are in the corner of the covered chicken run. I put the 3 I could get to in the coop, but could not reach the 3 under the coop. They always eagerly went into the coop before it snowed. They have done this 3 nights now and...

New chicken owner in Montana, here to prepare for Winter

Well, that's kind of a relief! I'm a single mom to 2 adopted grandchildren at age 70 and the last thing I need is more to do. lol. I get a pretty good price on a feed mix made by a local farmer, distributed to other farmers, so I'll stick to that.

New chicken owner in Montana, here to prepare for Winter

I have 12 chickens, 1 is a rooster. I don't even know what kind they are - maybe 3 or 4 different kinds. I got them from someone who needed to get rid of all of her chickens slightly before I was really ready to have them. But it's been a few months and they're alive and happy - just stopped...
