Anyone Else with Low Egg Production?

6 of my 10 have stopped laying for a little over a month now. All 6 are molting and look like something grabbed them and gave them a shake. They look so pathetic. :) I'm just happy 4 of them are not a year old yet and are still producing.

Baby chicks! What did you get this year/hatching?

My situation is probably a little different since I don't have any roosters yet. That being said, I have merged the flocks. I built a small mobile cage for the little ones. Every day I would roll them out and place them next to the run so the others can see them. Some days I let the big...

    3 month evaluation

I recently introduced some young barred rocks and BSLs to my existing flock of EEs and RIRs. I have one large EE that rules them all, but the RIRs are definitely second in command behind her. The little barred rocks are little sweeties. The BSLs are very friendly as well. There's not a lot...

Best breed to go with Rhode Island Red Flock?

I have Ameraucanas with mine, but they were raised together. I haven't introduced any new birds to the flock yet. Even though, generally the RIRs are larger, I have one large Ameraucana that has asserted herself as the flock leader. There's definitely a pecking order in the flock, but not...

What breed are you most excited to add this year?

They are all together. The ones with the white on top of their heads are the Barred Rocks.

Baby chicks! What did you get this year/hatching?

I just picked up 3 Black Sex Links and 3 Barred Plymouth Rocks. First time with either of these breeds. I got 5 Ameraucanas and 5 Rhode Island Reds last year.

What breed are you most excited to add this year?

I've been watching our local Orscheln's. They've had the corrals out for a few weeks and I've been getting chick-oriented mailers, but when I go, no chicks. I happened to be driving by this morning and stopped in. I stepped in and there was no chirping. I decided to go back and look anyway...

    Amerucana Late Bloomer?

I purchased an equal mix of Amerucana and Rhode Island Reds in April 2022. Based on the number and color of eggs, I determined that they were all laying by sometime around October 2022. I have only received brown and green eggs. I was a bit disappointed because I really wanted at least one of...

    First egg

They'll be a year old in May, I think. All four are producing the same color eggs, a pale green. I've been told that crossing them with a Rhode Island rooster will produce hens with eggs of a deeper color. I may try that. No rooster at the moment.

    First egg

Mine have been laying for about 4 months. The EEs eggs are very inconsistent. They still lay small eggs about a third of the time. I also have Rhode Island Reds and they are all producing good sized eggs. That egg is a nice color. All of mine are a bit more pale than that.
