    Rooster crow sudden change

Thank you for the responses. I haven't noticed any gasping or wheezing. There was a significant temperature change locally from balmy upper 70s to suddenly just below 20 degrees several nights in a row, but it is back to warm and humid again now. We have had an increase in cats prowling our...

    Rooster crow sudden change

Our Rhode Island Red rooster (who is exceptionally sweet, lets us pick him up and pet him, and after a high hormonal adolescent learning period has become very gentle and gentlemanly toward the hens) is about 9 months now. Last night we noticed that his 4:30am crow had changed from the typical...

    Normal mounting frequency?

We have 5 older girls from last year and a new group of 2 girls with one rooster we call Teeny (he isn't teeny any more, though he had been a smaller chick in the group). The younger group is about 7 months and have been laying eggs too. They are all Rhode Island Reds. An additional Speckled...

chicken eating plastic! will they live?????

Last year our girls ingested almost an entire pool noodle we had been using to winterize a water pipe in our yard. We just told people that the eggs weren't quiet organic! 🤪

    Pullet that crossed the road

Straight Speckled Sussex with no Welsummer at all? That would be plausible too. I don't know why our neighbor called it a Welsie, but it does look a lot like pictures of Speckled Sussex when I searched online.

    That would be great! 😊

    Pullet that crossed the road

I looked up pictures of a speckled Sussex, and that makes sense. She sure is pretty.

    Pullet that crossed the road

One of our neighbors' chickens escaped and decided she liked our yard better. We kept encouraging back across the road to them, but once it grew dark, we discovered her roosting in our Azaleas. The neighbors said we could keep her and that she is a "Welsie"... at least that's what it sounded...

First time deep cleaning / rats

Thank you! Yes, we are feeling better finally. Still tired and catching up on things, but it's good to be alive. 😀 Ah, the board is too narrow... That makes sense. It does catch the majority of the chickens' poop, but not all. Plus they also seem to like randomly pooping everywhere they go. 😝

First time deep cleaning / rats

Thank you so much for all the great advice. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. We got pretty sick for a while after I posted this. I don't know if these pictures are helpful enough, but here is the interior.

First time deep cleaning / rats

Thank you. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Our family got pretty sick for a while and was in survival mode.

First time deep cleaning / rats

Thank you so much for mentioning the need to avoid vinegar in the waterer when using the metal nipples! Our previous one was all plastic so I hadn't even considered the difference in using metal.

First time deep cleaning / rats

Thank you so much for responding. I want to kill germs as effectively as possible without harming the chickens. The rats seem to be mostly hanging out in the eaves, right on top of the hardware cloth we had installed to keep them out! I guess I will find out if they have any nests down below...

First time deep cleaning / rats

Just to clarify, it isn't so much the rat battle I am asking about, since there is a lot of forum material on rats already, but specifically the how to sanitize issue.

First time deep cleaning / rats

I've looked through the forum already and I'm not sure if this should be in coop maintenance or predators, but here we go with our specific situation... After having our chickens almost a year and doing the deep litter method with a poop board under the perch, we are getting ready for our...

    Ventilation in the humid cold

Wow! What is all that strange white stuff? 😉 Just kidding. It snows in my part of Florida once in awhile, though on the rare occasion that it does, it generally melts when it gets to the ground. It is amazing how different the weather is in different places. Thank you for the assurance about our...

    Ventilation in the humid cold

Newbies from Northwest Florida here... We have extremely high humidity conditions and generally hot climate, but it is about to drop into the low 20s after being pleasantly warm (mostly 70s and low 80s) for a while. (Yes, all the blooming plants are going to suffer.) Anyway, we built our coop...
