Our chickens stopped laying. We have 9 hens which 4 are brown egg layers and the rest Easter eggers plus a gentle rooster. They stopped loosing feathers, they are now fed Purina layer feed cause Scratch and Peck got to expensive. This is their second winter but it’s been unusually warm. I’m...
Wow ! I had no idea. I’m so glad I am getting the advice from all of you. Big Jim is maybe 20 inches tall. Plus he has these things like 3 inch long claws at his ankles. The hens of the same species don’t have them. I guess those are “spurs “ ? I have been going in the chicken yard wearing...
I have not handled any of the chickens when they were young. When they were old enough, they were put outside. I have given names to them but I don’t spend time making them friends. Out of 9 hens, one seems to want my attention. I wanted a rooster to protect the hens I realized after reading...
It is funny how Big Jim is. When he sees me coming up to their area, he and the hens run to me. He will get about 5 feet from me and stares. I will carefully toss the mealworms at his feet, but he just makes this soft sound and lets the hens eat it. He takes a while before he starts eating and...
Thank you for the reply. None of my chickens look like the ones in the molting article. They just have feathers everywhere and some hens have a feather or two sticking out odd like it’s ready to fall off any time, but no skin showing.
Thank you for your reply. I notice your names. I have Thyme, Sage, Ginger, Olive Oil, Salty, Paprika, Basil, Hot Stuff, Parsley, Rosemary and of course Big Jim.
So I put my ladies and gentleman into the run for a week. They all were quite accepting of this to my surprise.
I watched them, looking for an egg eater. I searched for any evidence that may prove that there is a bad chicken egg eater. I did come to the conclusion that there is no egg eater but...
You are so very kind. In answer to your question, all of them stay together and act upset when one of them begins to cackle at me for opening the nesting box when she’s laying there. They seem very attached to each other.
I’m growing mealworms and give the chickens about 40 total between the flock. I also give them some oats, lettuce, and some bread I bake. I don’t give them much and only maybe 3 times a week.
Wow, an eagle? That is so intimidating. Right now the chickens have about a quarter of an acre to roam around. We have 12 chickens which includes a rooster.
My husband David found her body under the coop. We are pretty confident that predators are not able to get into the chicken area. I have to remember to take pictures but hopefully it won’t happen again. Thank you for the reassurance about chicken ownership
It’s almost 1 am and my head hurts after reading so many fascinating and educational posts from other chicken lovers. I’m trying to learn as much as I can but the more I learn, I get overwhelmed and begin to think that I have no business being a chicken “Mom”. I am fond of my ladies and Mr. Roo...
I have 9 hens, some Easter eggers, an Olive Egger, Cuckoo Marian’s and Bielefelders plus a rooster. When they were laying eggs early spring I got 9 to 11 eggs daily. Now I get 2 to 5 eggs. There were a few hens that got broody, I let 2 alone to do their thing, and now have 2 chicks that are 6...
I have an olive Egger also. I don’t know what breed she is. She’s white with a dusting of brown on her back. She is strange because she likes to go into coop and inspects all the new eggs, pecking and turning them. Sometimes she acts broody except she quickly gets bored with that and goes to...
Oh WOW ! I just looked at your map. There’s 4 large buildings and they look fairly close to the street. The place I mentioned had 1 large building and was set much further from the road. I would not want to live there.
I have an idea about Oklahoma weather. My experiences : I lived across from a man who had maybe 20 chickens and during the hot humid days it stunk and we had to live with an awful smell when the wind blew in our direction. I doubt he cleaned the yard. We also traveled to a vacation cabin...
