    Too Hot???

I did not have them separated. Will try a second attempt and separate than from the flock. They did not hatch early, right on time. Thank you for your responses and input.

    Too Hot???

A little over three weeks ago I bought 8 fertilized eggs to put under my 2 broody hens. Candled them, all looked good. Then the heat wave set in. Had about two weeks of temps over 100. I'm sure in the coop it was even hotter. Thought I'd just see what happens. The chicks hatched a couple days...

    Introducing 2 new hens, help!!

I am going through a similar situation. Put the new hens in a sectioned off run next to the one I have with the existing hens. This was over a month ago. Tried to put them all together a few times now with no luck. Have them all together as of today and just going to leave them together to work...

    Winter water?

I used this last year with my 4 chickens. It worked well, but be prepared to clean it out every day. They do scratch odds and ends into the bowl. I set mine up on a few bricks and that did help a bit.

    Will this work?

I have a two gallon plastic waterer, the one with a red base. Can I flip a plastic heated dog dish to put under the 2 gallon waterer to keep the water from freezing? Has anyone tried this? The plastic dog dish I bought from Wal Mart. I used it last year, but the water got pretty messy. Just...

Broody hens = lots of chicks!

I had a friend "chicken sitting" over the weekend and I forgot to mention to her to leave the broody hen alone and not to try and check for eggs!

    This is new to me...

I've had chickens for about a year now. One of my girls has gone broody. We have no rooster so there will be no chicks. I tried to look under her for eggs, but she bit me twice. I didn't see any, but there could be a few in there. I just leave her alone. She's been on the nest for about 5 days...

What's in the bottom of your coop?

Pine shavings by us. Do deep litter and clean out twice a year. When I first read about deep litter, I thought it was going to be gross, but love it. Doesn't smell at all.

    Dust Bath Questions?

If they free range, they will go anywhere they desire. I also have a litter box with sand in the run for when they are locked in.

    Hen problem!

I had an egg eater and was lucky and able to break her of the habbit. But you need to take the time to do it. The main thing I did, like green mentioned, is check the nest box often. i was going out every hour if not more. If that's not possible it might be hard to control this problem. I also...

How did I get an egg this big?

That's probably the case. Sometimes I'll get a big one if they skip a few days. Was it a double yolk?

Will chickens eat my watermelon and cantelope plants?

Play it safe and fence it off. Nothing more stressful that watching your chickens destroy a garden.
