how long to pressure cook a cut up 3 yr old laying hen?

I'm doing it right now and set the cooker for 30 minutes. I added some onion and celery seed (don't have fresh celery) plus 1.5 cups of water and the entire hen, cut up. Do you think 30 minutes is enough? I'm going to take the meat off the bones and freeze it for chicken and noodles next week.

    What just happened??

We got 15 chicks last Thursday and they're living, for the moment, in a box that is in a coop. The box is about 20-24" tall. We got 5 easter eggers, 5 red stars, and 5 silver laced wyandottes. The coop is all closed up with 1/2" hardware cloth on all openings and there is bedding in the coop...

broody hens and roll-out nest boxes

If we put in roll-out nest boxes do we need to worry about buying breeds that tend to go broody?

If you've made or use roll-out nest boxes...

I have some questions. Since we're starting with new chicks soon we want to modify our nest boxes so that the eggs will roll out and away. We had a lot of problems with broken eggs (some we just found the shells so maybe some being eaten as well) and had a big problem with very poopy eggs. We...

Hens butchered today-do you ever get used to it?

I knew this day would come but I've been so weepy all day. Does it ever get easier? We raise our own hogs and cattle but I don't interact with them much, if any. The chickens were my job and until I hurt my back last year, I was out there with them every day (then dh took over the watering and...

Questions about steaming eggs (to hard cook)

Do you have to put the eggs in a single layer, like for boiling, or can you stack them up? How long do you steam them for hard boiled?

grr ... chickens roosting in the nest boxes

dh had to collect eggs after dark the other day and there was a chicken in one of the nest boxes. It was dark so he couldn't tell which one it was. So that explains why there's been so much poop in the nest boxes (and almost always at the very end of it which supports a roosting chicken in...

    Would you pitch these eggs?

We lost a hen today (first one) and she was in a nest with 4 eggs. She was not broody-these eggs were laid today. For some reason I'm a bit squicked out about using eggs that had been sitting under a dead hen, even if for only a few hours. dh insists they are fine and to just wipe them down...

Crazy question about unfiltered ACV and valve waterers

We switched to a valve type waterer today. The valve is the type that looks like a car tire valve and is TINY. When I was measuring out the ACV it occurred to me that there is always floating junk in it and normally, it wasn't an issue since the old waterer has a big hole that the water comes...

question about the little giant auto waterer with the red bowl

The type with the valve. How fast is it supposed to fill? We got our system going and are still adjusting so it's not in with the chickens yet. It takes a long time to fill but when I push on the valve, water does come out. More than a drip but less than a stream. But when it's filling, it's...

    Little Giant waterer owners

I'm talking about the type with the red bowl that automatically fills up (can't edit my post title). NOT the type with the water reservoir attached to the red tray. We are getting ready to set one of these up, using a 5 gallon bucket as a water supply. I have a couple of questions. Does the...

Is there some kind of flexible netting that is critter-proof?

We are planning to cover the top half of our run in chicken wire this summer for when we go on vacation (the bottom half will be covered with 1/2" hardware cloth). I'm trying to figure out easier alternatives. is there any kind of flexible netting that would be easier to put on than chicken...

switching to nest pads-has anyone done this and had their chickens quit using them?

I hate like the dickens when it's really windy (like it has been for the past month or two, or so it seems) and when I get eggs the shavings swirl all over and get all over me. It's no better to go in the coop and in fact, it's worse. So I wanted to switch to the excelsior nest pads so that I...

    Broken eggs twice this week...coincidence?

Our girls are about 10 mos old. They've been laying steadily since sometime in October and until this week we've never had a single broken egg. On Sunday we had a broken egg in the 'favorite' nest box. There were several other eggs in there too, so we figured it was an accident from eggs...

Best price for the Little Giant automatic waterer (red w/ a plastic bowl)?

I saw it for about $30 shipped on Amazon and $28 shipped at incubator warehouse. Anyone know of the best deal? I only need one to start with. We're planning to use these while we are on vacation and I want to start using it early to make sure it'll work out for us.

What might happen if we get rid of our rooster?

We love him-he's beautiful and not mean and we love hearing him crow. He seems to take care of the girls but they don't free range so he isn't really needed for warnings and protection and such. But he is tearing up the backs of some of the hens. Some have gotten a little bloody and scabby. I...

Has anyone planted hops outside the run for shade?

I read in a magazine that it grows up to 25 ft per year and comes back every year. I'm looking for easy grow hardy plants that will come back every year to plant outside our run for shade. I prefer to avoid grapes or any other of that type of fruit since it would be eaten up by wild birds who...
