    Quail hen puffed and lethargic

Unfortunately she passed away this afternoon. Wouldn't drink even when I put her beak up to the water. I hope at least she was comfortable. I'm posting a pic of the poop in case it's helpful to identify what went wrong and what I need to watch for in the rest of the flock.

    I will! She's about 7 months old.

Bumblefoot in quail - scab removal question

Wanted to report that all of the dead skin has fallen away and the quail's foot is fully healed as of yesterday! Thank you for all your help.

    Quail hen puffed and lethargic

Okay, I set her up in the isolation cage. She seemed unable to stand up when I put her in (it's a bin with shavings and not wire). She also had some fresh poop stuck to her underside that wasn't a weird color. I provided her with some warm electrolyte supplement water. I will look into a calcium...

    Quail hen puffed and lethargic

This morning I went out to feed my quail and found one of my hens (about 7 months old) sitting in the middle of the enclosure, feathers puffed up very fat, awake but not moving around, even after being poked a bit. I picked her up and she didn't resist, but when I flipped her over she did...

Bumblefoot in quail - scab removal question

After two days of scraping, we've removed most of the dead bits, and our hen has gotten more energetic and wiggly, which we're happy about. How do I know when we're done removing the infection? From here can we just replace the wrap daily, or does this clearly need more work? Thank you so much...

Bumblefoot in quail - scab removal question

This is my first time dealing with bumblefoot, so I'm following directions as laid out in another thread. Compared to other pictures I've seen, though, this infection seems MASSIVE and I don't know how much I can take off at a time, even after the 20 minute Epsom soak. Should I try to get it all...

    Male/female separation logistics

This idiot is the one who keeps climbing over the others' heads while they're trying to get a drink 😂 He's my favorite but he's also my escape artist and I'm not sure that's the kind of behavior I want coming down the gene pool.

    Male/female separation logistics

Makes sense. I'm currently watching their behavior in their separate pens - the hens are all totally chill while the guys are in varying states of either chilling, shoving others around, or crowing, and one is running back and forth, clambering over and under the other boys even though there's...

    Male/female separation logistics

Today I separated my 5.5 week old Coturnix quail into male and female pens after discovering blood on the cheek of one of the hens (the blood was also on her claw so it's possible she scratched herself, but she's temporarily sequestered in order to heal up). Yesterday at least two of the males...

    Changing brooder bedding - temperatures

Makes sense given how big they are! Would you keep around a dozen of that age in a 40-gallon bin, maybe? I'll have to get a second light 😩

    Changing brooder bedding - temperatures

Those of you who use the plastic bins for brooders, how many chicks do you keep in there? (Mine is 40 gallon.) These 24 chicks are taking up an awful lot of room at 2 weeks old, a lot more than they did when they were freshly hatched. 😅

    Weird toes on chick

Thanks for the advice. 😩 Poor little guy.

    Weird toes on chick

Update: The little guy always had a little limp and it's become a lot more pronounced lately, with one leg often going off at a funny angle. He's also one of my two runts and gets trampled a lot. We cleaned up his feet as he had some stuff stuck under his nails, and that helped a little, but is...

    Weird toes on chick

This little guy is about a week old and over the last couple of days I noticed his/her toes are a bit funny. He's one of my youngest two from this clutch. Is this going to be a problem for him?

    Changing brooder bedding - temperatures

The two-bin method is working great and nobody seems at all bothered by the temperature shifts so far! But transfering the birds is about to become a little more challenging, since we're already seeing some wing feathers coming in and a couple of them made valiant attempts at flight this evening...

    Changing brooder bedding - temperatures

Brilliant! I'm going to do this. My husband is off picking up a second bin right now.
