To top off my bear close call today noted in another post, I am concerned I may have mites. I am attempting the deep litter method, and while going to agitate the existing bedding and add a new top layer I discovered some small insects that may be mites. It was hard to get a clear photo, but was...
A bear checked out my birds today. Luckily, my Ring cameras went off and I was able to turn on the microphone and scare it away. I’m assuming it will return.
I I’ll likely order an electric fence tonight. Any recommendations on one or other ideas to deal with this?
I attached a few more photos close-up of the foot after rinsing it off. I don’t see anything at all. Maybe it’s some kind of joint injury. Is anything looking suspect to you more seasoned chicken owners? I’ll monitor it and spray Vetericyn daily this week.
I added a picture of the bird also. Is...
I’m thinking maybe an injury from the roosting bar is possible. I have to see how the next days go. Also, I just noticed looking at the picture, but perhaps this is a rooster! Is that a spur I see developing by my finger in the first picture? 17 week old.
I noticed one of my birds limping today and she’s holding one of her legs up. Does anybody notice anything suspicious in the attached pictures? I don’t see anything obvious myself. First timer here. Thank you.
I’m just putting up a post with praise for my experience ordering from Chickens for Backyards. I ordered 6 pullets that shipped to NY mid February. I received extra in my order. All survived both shipping and now 17 weeks and healthy. I may possibly have one rooster but not sure at this time...
Ladies are in the coop as of a few weeks ago. I’m still touching up trim under hardware and finishing some odds and ends but I’m close to full completion. I modified the roasting bar setup after the posted photo. I added a lower bar at back to help access the higher bar, and removed the right...
I am doing the same and tonight is the first night for my flock. I hung the waterer from a chain inside for now. I used the brooder feeder in the floor until I get whatever I’m using outside. I may step to a 5 gallon bucket with the feeding ports to keep it cheap and see how it goes.
I posted some coop build pics in another thread. I want to get some feedback and suggestions on my roosting bar setup before getting the birds in.
In summary, I setup for same level roosting bars. 6x6’ coop. Roosts are 18” off each side and 5’ long each side. Cross bar roost is 36” across on...
I added this interior landing. 11.5”x16” wide. I’ll add a brace underneath tomorrow. It’s just nailed to a 2x4 now. Next I’ll find a solution for an intermediate height bar for them to get up to roost.
That’s what I’m using, except the 1/4x1/4 is 23 ga vs the 19 ga on the 1/2x1/2. I was worried about something biting through it and looking for experiences. It seems fairly strong but one never knows.
