I had my son pick a breed to breed for 4H and he picked them on a whim. They are so stinking sweet- even (sometimes, ESPECIALLY) the boys. We have porcelain and Mille Fleur. I think this boy is likely split to porcelain. He has the type I’m looking for so I hope he pulls through!
He’s acting a lot perkier today. His crop felt pretty normal yesterday. It was the consistency of my healthy birds, and this morning he is eating with them right now. I watched him have both regular and cecal poops- both were the same color and consistency of my healthy adults. I gave him the...
I am coming up on year 4 of chicken raising, and thankfully have never had to deal with coccidia. But right now I have a chick (just over two months) who all of the sudden is acting very off. He is puffed up and slow, broadcasting all the signs of “I don’t feel good”. Unfortunately I am not...
I haven’t noticed the smell at all, not even on my gloves after I applied the ointment. I was really anticipating having to soak her several more times, but the day after I cleaned her out, all of the oozing was gone.
Full disclosure though, that first night was nightmare. I have never been...
I’ve been checking her several times a day for any more maggot activity, and I haven’t seen any. Yes, it is. I will link it below, I’ve really been impressed with it. My sister is a PA and I was looking for something that would be effective on necrotic tissue. Apparently this is veterinarian...
The gel is actually clear. The black is necrotic tissue. It’s very rough feeling when it’s not covered in the ointment, almost like a scab. I actually let her out briefly today so I could clean out her crate and she sprinted over to her flock mates to conduct business as usual. But once I...
Hello everybody, Tuesday evening I was outside doing chicken chores and saw that my buckeye had a particularly dirty looking bottom. I picked her up to discover that she had an abundance of maggots near her vent and the smell was atrocious. I soaked her in warm water and epsom, removed every...
We don’t have the funds to send her out, so I did a crude at home necropsy. The green stuff is definitely fluid, kind of soupy. I didn’t see any evidence of it in her lungs, but it was in the back of her mouth and throat. I could not express any from the lower portion of the trachea.
I don’t...
Hello!
I had a hen who started exhibiting some gasping earlier this week. She has passed but I’m stumped as to what happened:
Three days ago, I noticed one of my broody Brahmas was having some issues breathing. She was gasping/craning her neck, with a very occasional (violent) sneeze. I took...
I have 3 Mille Fleur that I hatched from my own birds, and three porcelain from somebody else’s lines. I’m afraid if I wound up with four boys and two girls at best it’s maybe three and three. What do you guys think?
I have 3 mama hens to chicks aged 1.5-2.5 weeks old. I thought everything had been going great- each mom had one baby, except one had 2- but I noticed if I ever need to handle a chick (it’s caught, it has a wound, etc.) it winds all the moms up and they start lashing out at any and everybody. I...
Honestly, I think it was probably some sort of head injury. I think what probably happened is that the swelling went down overtime, but that it didn’t fully heal. I know they are prone to those sorts of things with the way their skulls are shaped.
I ended up treating her with the vitamins for about 2 weeks- it didn’t seem to get worse or better. However I ended up rehoming her around that time as well.
I believe she continued the nutridrench but I’m not sure for how long. She sent me an update a few weeks ago of her ranging with some...
