Yes that is so true. We brooded them in a old style small coop and when we moved them to the grown up roost they were completely confused. Slept everywhere but in the roost until I hand placed them multiple times.
I do think it must be the hens - not sure when or why it's happening. I do have two separate roost spaces for the flock. (I had pulled the hens that the rooster hurt and put them in a small mobile coop to recover. When I merged them back into their flock I just wheeled the mobile coop in, and...
This is a 6 month old Australorp hen. We had a rooster who pulled feathers out of her head, along with a few other hens. They have all seemed to recover, but she is getting worse, and at times those bare spots look almost as if they had bled. The rooster we have now is pretty gentle (the rough...
I only recently tried one, but he was an older roo. They have nice meaty breasts and good flavor. Hope to add to my flack next year. Nicest roosters I’ve ever owned - but that’s a small sample. They are so docile.
Debating. Tested this out recently and all seemed well until weeks 4-5 when the chicks dissappeared. We had only 3 but ive not figured out what happened. They in with my small dorking flock.
Good points! Next year I will try to start with hatching eggs, under broodies if possibe, or incubation if necessary. I am planning to remove the roosters once they are obvious or creating trouble. Then i suppose i can separate the clear cut culls as i figure it out. And when Ive whittled it...
Well thats a lot of information. The stock i was going to bring in would be in the form of hatching eggs - from a source that breeds to the SOP. This way i am hoping to start with better genetics than i currently have.
Biosecurity is important and hatching eggs solve that dilemma, somewhat. I...
I actually meant it the second way. Since I’m starting over - I sure don’t want to mess it up again. From what Ridgerunner said - she starts with 20 and ends up with two or 3 serious candidates. So I guess if I’m doing hatching eggs - I’ll need 2 dozen.
Yes! Totally agree! That is my overall...
Thinking back on this - rhetorical question - I’m wondering how many of you chuckled over my statement that I ordered 4 roosters so i could be selective. I certainly am. 😉
Thank you. I will start over, but keep the wry tail for protection until i bring in new candidates.
I am not that interested in perfect SOP specimens - i wont be showing them - but I dont want to introduce many defects. I think temperment and speed of development can be overlooked, but they are...
I spent alot of time in the run yesterday, and noticed the shy one being rough with the girls and not sharing treats. He’s shy of me and the other roosters, so I think I was wrong about him.
I had all the Rooster separated once they started maturing, and only recently have blended them in two...
Thank you, this helps alot. I thought maybe i was being overly harsh in my expectations of roosters, because i feel like we are dining on rooster rather frequently. I have some leads on future sources - people who are breeding to the SOP - so that will be next summers project. In the interim...
Thank you. I totally agree. He is overly anxious in his mating - and selfish with goodies. Ive not seen him be violent intentionally. I was excusing some of it because he is so young and has to mate on sly when i had him in the other pen. Thus the move. I just didnt want to make a mistake and...
The wry tail and slow maturing fellows are doing ok together so far. There have a very large run and access to a small orchard so lots of hiding places. The one that i think was rough i put into another flock - on a large pasture - but a hen showed up with some blood on the side of her face...
I have been keeping chickens for only a few years, so I could use some advice from those with more experience. I have a young flock of Australorp - 5 months old. I have 14 hens, and started with 4 roosters so I could be choosy about which I keep. I have removed one (he was aggressive with me)...
So sorry. I had a wry necked hen that didn’t respond to treatment. She had a strong will to live and made it almost to two years but was always chased away and picked on. I don’t know if I did the right thing. Ultimately a hawk took her partly because she was more afraid of her own flock. Not...
