Update-- salt soak didn't reveal any hidden maggots, and we have flushed her beak out twice now (last night and this morning) with no maggots found. So either we got them all/irritated them out, or they are too deep in there. I have optimism it's the first because her energy keeps improving...
Yes it is such helpful information. Thank you. She is still kicking this morning, good appetite, energy, etc. She only eats when she is with her sister so my routine is to put her outside in a baby play pen with the other duck for 10 minutes to let them eat their fill. I watch to make sure no...
We haven't gotten to talk to the vet directly, just the receptionist who is relaying messages back and forth. They also prescribed Silver Sulfadiazine Cream to put on it but we haven't done that yet tonight. It seems like adding a barrier like that isn't going to help with healing until the...
We are using diluted betadine per vets suggestion. Tonight we got maybe 10 maggots out. It looks like they are eating a hole into the top of her mouth which is horrifying. There are so many nooks and crannies in her bill cavity too so I'm not sure how successful we will be in the long run. What...
Unfortunately we live in a yurt with only one room, 450 square feet, which is why we didn't bring her/them in earlier. Now she's inside in a large feed trough bin in the middle of everything-- kitchen bedroom and living room! They can hear each other through the thin walls and they're still...
Thanks. I'm pouring through old threads on maggots, easy to get freaked out! We have a betadine solution for flushing her beak out, and after reading everywhere I decided to bring her in away from other flies. Unfortunately she is separated from her friend (only have the two) and it's causing...
It's not bleeding, but seems to be rotting away. We don't have access to a specialist vet. She is actually in really good spirits, eating well, not seeming in pain.
Well, she is fully eating again and seems to be regaining her energy! The bad news: today we saw maggots in her beak. Vet says to flush with warm water 2x daily. Any other suggestions? Keeping her inside is unfortunately not an option, otherwise we would have avoided this.
Good news everyone. This morning she is ALIVE and she is drinking bone broth and took a few successful bites of mash!! We are still going to get the tube feeding supplies this morning. Do you all think we should still try to or watch and see how much food she can eat on her own today?
Thanks everyone. We are hoping she pulls through tonight and then we'll do it first thing tomorrow morning if we can gather the supplies in town. All I can do tonight is pray she makes it!
Thanks everyone -- we have a friend who may have a bird tube feeder we can use. She's a small duck, just about 3 1/2 lbs-- how long of a tube and what size diameter do you think? I couldn't find anything about that in a quick search of the other forum
I just did more research on force feeding and I'm worried I did more harm than good by trying to syringe liquid into her mouth. It's possible some got into her airway. So it seems like tube feeding might be our best option at this point.
Here is a picture. You can see there is part of her bottom bill that has turned black that the vet said will fall off. She seems like shes losing energy. We syringed some bone broth into her mouth a few hours ago, but I'm afraid to cause damage tube feeding and it seems like I've seen ducks with...
My 3 month Pekin duck (Dill) was injured by a predator last week and her bill was damaged. We have hopes that most of the bill will heal, there are some scratches and abrasions but the biggest issue is a tear at the bottom/side of her bill that at this point has blackened and will likely fall...
