3 again today!
Juin is going to have laid a month straight soon. I always feel better when they take days off regularly, but I’m grateful nonetheless for all these cute beige eggs :)
I also believe it’s a cockerel. Here is my Blue Cuckoo Marans pullet at the same age, to compare:
Her comb only started turning pink at around 10 weeks old.
I’m thinking those are walnut combs, like you’d find on a Silkie. Walnut would make sense genetically if it was an EE hen crossed with a rooster that had a rose comb, but I’m assuming that it was the same rooster who sired Fuzzyfoot. His mom was likely a Marans based on the brown speckled egg...
I’m not a pro, but I believe it’s a cockerel. Sapphire Gems/Blue Plymouth Rocks are a sex-linked hybrid, and only males have barring like yours is showing.
She’s adorable! Did she show any of the cuckoo pattern when she was a chick? Mine seemed to have more when she was younger. I’ve seen other Blue Cuckoo Marans on here that have very little cuckoo speckling, similar to yours. My normal Cuckoo Marans is certainly much more cuckoo than my blue is.
Females can still have some barring/cuckoo pattern, it’s just hard to see. Here’s a picture of my Blue Cuckoo Marans, you can see she has barred leg feathers and some speckles on various other areas. I have seen a few on the forums that don’t seem cuckoo at all though, so solid blue also seems...
As far as I’m aware, breeds that can be autosexing have to be bred specifically for this trait. When I ordered a Blue Cuckoo Marans from a hatchery, they told me that their Blue Cuckoo Marans are vent sexed rather than sexed by chick down. They mentioned sometimes the head spots of barred...
Mystic Onyx is a cross between a Silkie and some type of meat bird I believe. Are you thinking Mystic Marans? Those are indeed sex-linked, and males would be barred. I would say yours looks like a Mystic Marans pullet, rather than a Mystic Onyx, but I’ve never had either breed.
