Coop expansion it is then. Although it makes me wonder, I actually let them out quite late in the day, usually 7:30am, maybe they just don’t like that? I may be able to correct this with the automated chicken door and letting them out earlier? Maybe they are bored of waiting, it’s just by the...

There are two of them, but I guess the sleeping space itself is fairly small, it’s 6 square feet; and then the roofed area is 12 square feet. The whole run is decidedly bigger -64 square feet. They spend majority of their time sitting on the roof - rain or shine.

I have a question about the behaviour of my chickens - this is an established behaviour that has been consistent over the past 3 months. Their chicken coop is a fairly short structure and within their run they have higher places to go to - mainly the top of the roof, so that’s where they have...

Decreased daylight time and egg laying for soon to be layers

I am a new chicken momma as well and waiting for my end of May and supposedly early layers to surprise me with an egg, hopefully soon, but I am not getting my hopes up and am prepared for all possibilities ☺️. Fascinating stuff though and anticipation is palpable - for all experienced chicken...

Yes, they are considered mature at around 22 weeks. Technically they may start laying from 18 weeks, but most start laying by 22 weeks - so I’ve been told at the hatchery.

Hello friends, We are new to chickens. We have two 14 week old Azure Blue and I have a really hard time determining exactly what they are. To me it seems that we have one of each? - a hen and a rooster, but I really don’t know. Web searching Azure Blue roosters doesn’t really bring me any...

We are first time chicken owners and not only completely brand new, but also hobbyists - we have 2 chicks (literally) and they are more like pets for our kids, than anything else, as we live in the suburbs and can’t really have an entire flock (unfortunately) without raising the complaints from...

The weather cooperated this week! They were out for majority of each day and like their new home. We still keep them inside for the nights and in the morning when the grass is still wet. For the next two weeks the forecast is not the greatest - rain and more rain. They are 4 weeks today (and...

Thank you! Yes, we do have the coop and the run already set up. I was thinking of slowly starting to introduce them to the great outdoors and coop setup this week - each day for a little bit, weather permitting. We are in an area where summers are usually super hot and humid, so far since we...

    Suburban chicken family

Hello from Ontario, Canada! We are a suburban family raising 2 Azure Blue chicks. They are 3 weeks old. We have received them 2 weeks ago from our son’s school - they were covering “Green Technologies” and the teacher decided that homesteading is the best thing to teach the kids :), the chicks...
