    Cream Legbar Crosses..

Hey, picking this up a year later…so - a Silverudds Blue roo and a Creme Legbar hen - will their offspring be Easter Eggers? Love chicken genetics but finding it somewhat confusing… The breeds usually used to create EEs are not available here (Sweden), or are very hard to find (at least...

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

Ah, that’s so sweet - thank you! I am sure yours’ll be stunning! And great choice, we had a different roo (Swedish Flower) when Hassan was hatched, I got 9 roos in that hatch and sold all but this guy, but he didn’t reach his full potential until I sold my Flower roo - that’s when he shodes his...

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

I figured it was your guy in your ”avatar”(?), he is beautiful! Bummer we can’t ship eggs across the Atlantic… I got chickens 2 years ago and immediately became Crazy Chicken Lady, had no idea they would be that much fun! Now next project is to breed (let Helen sit on more eggs she’s a killer...

Love Blue Splash, really hard to find those colors in Sweden, Orps are still pretty unusual here.

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

Thank you! I think his fluff has to do with the fact that he’s an English Buff Orpington, I don’t know exactly how that works but it seems to me that the Buff Orpingtons you get in the US are slightly less fluffy? My ladies are almost as big.

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

They are very docile, and in my experience, quiet. My former rooster was a Swedish Flower Hen and he drove us and the whole neighbourhood nuts with his crowing. Hassan, our BO rooster, doesn’t feel the need. I think it’s because he’s so large, he doesn’t feel threatened by much… I don’t know...

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

Thank you! Hatched nine, sold eight and kept this guy. He is so sweet and calm, good genes. Saw this Orp-mix in an ad, Buff Orp + Brahma and she was gorgeous! All Orp body with beige and chocolate feathers. Yeah, I really hope people share!

Why are my 9-month-old hens not laying?!

Agree with all before me; feed those ladies! 24/7! My flock of 15 goes through a 40 lbs bag of feed/week (though to be fair, a lot of it end up on the ground in their encolsed yard), they free range, they have free access to a huge compost aaand they get treats. If you can’t afford to feed your...

Hi all! I have a huge gorgeous and very sweet English Buff Orpington roo whom I am looking to breed. His girls are two Swedish Flower hens, two Plymouth Barred Rocks, three French Black Copper Marans, two Olive Eggers, one Hedemora, one Silverudds Blue, one Cream Legbar and of course, two...

When do I let mommy and her chicks loose in the flock?

Agree, thank you both for posting this. I have a moma hen with 5 x 3-day old chicks in the coop separated by wire mesh from the others I will for sure open their door today and let them mingle. Of course mama hen can protect them, humans are always interferring with everything. Like you said, we...

When to move eggs from hen to incubator?

Hi, thank you, yes, I was aware of this and they had been settled for 24 hrs at the post office when I picked them up (they know what to do when eggs arrive in my name) but I am sure this also was part of it. Interesting though, how many things factor in. It was cold outside, only a few above...

When to move eggs from hen to incubator?

Hey, yeah, I suspect you’re right, wow, that was a surprise! I will sneak the other three undern her tonight, I’ve had them in nesting box material from her own box today so they will smell like her, and under a very low set heat roof (they were bought from someone who used a lamp). Fingers crossed!

When to move eggs from hen to incubator?

Update again, 24 days after shoving those eggs under her - a tiny little male Cream Legbar suddenly appeared on the camera! He must have hatched last night, he is miniscule. Just bought 3 backups (black copper marans) that I will put under her tonight, and hopefully there will be more chicks...

When to move eggs from hen to incubator?

Thank you all for your awesome replies! I have my incubator up and running just in case, and I’ll let her have them, she’s been such a good girl with them. It’s dark here now, and I will keep an eye on her for as long as I can today/night. She’s also been out eating a lot more today, very...

When to move eggs from hen to incubator?

Good thinking, and if all doesn’t hatch I’ll just give them back to her, I guess. I have a camera on her so I’ll keep an eye.

When to move eggs from hen to incubator?

Hi all, I have a gorgeous, huge English Buff Orpington sitting on 12 eggs and it’s day 21. She started with 14, but kicked two out. I candeled on day 11 and all 12 were good. Where I’m at, it’s now mid afternoon and to be exact, they have been under her for exactly 21 days and 3 hours. The eggs...

How many eggs under a broody Buff Orpington?

Picking up this thread, dunno if you even can do that but…. I have a broody English Buff Orpington (they are larger than the variety commonly sold in the US) and I just stuck 14 eggs under her, so fingers crossed. A few Creme Legbar, some Silverudds/Isbar and a few Easter Eggers.

Buff Orpington girl won’t leave nestbox in dead winter

My Buff girl Helen went broody for the first time at 9 months (she started laying at 8 months, mine are English Buffs and they start laying late), and she just went broody for the sencond time now, at 11 months. I will let her lay on eggs this time and if she hatches chicks, I will provide...
