So I posted a few weeks ago here about how a discovered a newly-made Chicken Wiki: http://chickens.wikia.com/wiki/Chicken_Wiki. Well, I thought it would just be one of those wikis that grows a bit, then nobody edits, and it fades into the background, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It...

I hope you were joking about that. It's not like he's maliciously eating eggs: he's probably not even really thinking about what he's doing in the little brain of his, so killing him out of anger would be....uh, kinda evil. But even so, I hear ya. The little buggers can sometimes push...
Hey all! Been way too long since by last visit to BYC. It has also been a beautiful day here in Kauai: wish i could send some of this warm weather to all your chickens with cold toes!
On a random note, I just happened to stumble upon this: http://chickens.wikia.com/wiki/Chicken_Wiki, Chicken...
Oh wow, they swim?? How did I not know this..... Beautiful pics - keep em coming!! Sure makes me want one of my own, if I had the room, although there may be laws against keeping them here in Kauai. After all if they would get loose, I'm not sure people would love having a bunch of huge living...
OUCH. Happened to me at least once, with one in each pocket. SPLAT!
Despite that, I refuse to learn my lesson and routinely store eggs in my pockets when a basket isn't available. I TRY to be more careful now though.
Having never had to deal with roosters before, I was kinda in doubt myself when I decided to get one. I checked around a bit on the web, found some info on BYC, and now have one of the nicest Polish roosters you could have. He's a real card, and entertains to no end. Thing is, I actually bought...
I let the chooks roam the back yard, but not without a fence. I guess it just depends on where you live and what kind of predators you have. There aren't too many here, so that's not much of a problem for me.
hear hear Yazzo! We should all respect each others opinions. I'm just trying to find some good info on roosters, and i think yours is the best by far. cant wait to try these techniques and get my new rooster. should be an interesting experience.
I don't really know much about chickens, but i would really like to have a good sort of 'friendship' with my new rooster. So i say a combiation of the above. He should respect you and never be allowed to even try to attack you, but you should be able to be gentle and kind with him and actually...
I agree. Age is not an issue at all.
Personally, I've never tried these techniques, since I don't even have a rooster yet lol. I plan on using them though, since they seem to make a lot on sense.
I don't have any questions yet, but will let you know if I have one once i get my new roo.
Thank you all for the good info! I was wondering, although if I suspected I had a bad egg, i would certainly put it into my composter, not throw it away.
I. LOVE. THIS. THREAD!!!!
Thank you so much for the masterful advise! I only have a few chooks, and will try these techniques on my new rooster as soon as I get him!
I'm pretty new here, so I'm not sure about all the technicalities, but could someone (a moderator?) get this thread stickied...
I have a black lab mix that does just fine with my few chickens. I've heard tell of dogs that kill one chicken, then learn though. I would never let my dogs kill even one chicken!
