    Introducing new chickens

It's a headache for sure, breaking up squabbles etc 😂 It is definitely doable but it has to be done correctly.

    Introducing new chickens

First thing I'd be concerned about is bringing in any disease or parasites to your existing flock. Are you set up to quarantine the new birds for a while so you can be sure they're not bringing anything in? This is a pretty stressful time for them so their immunity will be low. Last thing you...

    Copper leg bands?

I really don't think they'd notice that small of a weight. I put the size of the tag in an AI calculator and it came out at 0.07% of the total bodyweight of the chicken. I personally wouldn't use leather as I've seen what happens to saddles, boots, bridles etc when they don't get oiled. They...

Where do you show your quail in Australia

I'd hit up any local agricultural show societies to see if they have or would consider showing quail. I don't know a lot about quail, do they have any breed standards/standard of perfection?

    Copper leg bands?

I have a bit of a pet hate for aluminium and plastic. I'm swapping out all my plastic feeders/waterers for stainless steel now too. I don't want my chooks to have to wear something close to their skin that I wouldn't wear myself. Copper is heavier but I doubt they'd really notice it.

    Copper leg bands?

G'day everyone, I'm just curious to know if anyone has made leg bands out of copper flat bar? I am trying to reduce the amount of plastic I use plus the ones I have used end up breaking. I'm currently using coloured zip ties they fade and look like crap. I don't like the idea of aluminium on...

    2026 Chick Thread!

I've just hatched my first clutch of eggs here. I was going to wait till next spring (I'm in Australia) before I hatched any eggs from my pullets but I had older hens go broody so I thought I'd give some a go. First clutch was 5 eggs in total. 3 Old English game and 2 OEG/Malay cross. We candled...

    Starting my resilience flock.

Another hatched last night. Another egg is pipping too. This chick is also a Malay/OEG cross where the 3rd and last will be pure OEG.

    Starting my resilience flock.

Had our 1st chick hatch this morning, which is an Old English Game crossed with a Malay game. Fingers crossed we have another one or two in that clutch but I have another hen sitting on more OEG/Malay eggs plus a couple of OEG/Barnevelder which I doubt are fertile but we'll candle them Sunday.

    UV paint

"Mongrel forest chicken people" definitely sounds like my tribe 🤣 That's interesting and very refreshing to read about the Orpingtons being able to get up that high. I think a barn is a great spot for them to roost. My goals now with my chooks is to get them to use their natural behaviours to...

    UV paint

This is more to make use of the chickens ability to see UV light. I'm just not sure if it's still as visible in lower light conditions. Reflectors need light to work.

    UV paint

I have an auto door on the coop but I lock them in their run on dusk. They free range from around 6am till dusk. I have tall roosts in my coop to try and encourage them to develop wing strength to help them become more athletic to help with avoiding predation. I'm also breeding lighter breeds...

    UV paint

Sorry, reflect is the correct word. If roosts didn't need to reflect light then they'd never see them at all.

    UV paint

Their eggs give off UV light so I thought it may help at dusk when they roost. My roosting bars don't get very dirty at all, nearly all the poo ends up on the ground below.

    UV paint

I thought with the way they can see the UV from their eggs I thought it might also be a cheap way to help them differentiate the roosting bars in lower light. Thank you for that link, I'm definitely going to have a good read through that when I can focus a bit better. At a glance it looks like...

    Pecking order? Or bullying?

I'm not an expert but here's my observations from my own flock. I have a rooster that is around 15mths old. He was introduced to the flock at around 12mths old. He will not get involved in hen squabbles but he does chase pullets off food etc like the older hens do. My rooster before him I bought...
