Hey, so she stayed close to us the whole time, didn't fly onto the lake or engage in the other ducks so much, so we ended up taking her back home with us. We're gonna try again Friday. The ornithologist we have been in touch with said we could leave her there and she would be fine, but we're...
The why is easy; we found her as an egg and the plan was never to make her a pet, but to help her get back to where she belongs. And she will be fine for food as she has been outside 24/7 and foraging her own food by most part for the past month.
Yes, we are gonna bring some foods and hangout.. and really hope it will go okay. I'm pretty stressed about it. I will write an update here when it's done.
She is still around, but we have found a large natural lake populated with wild ducks where we will bring her this Sunday and hopefully she will stay :)
Yes, she's been able to take proper flight for some time now. A few times she has flown far away to return some minutes or up to two hours later. Also she likes flying up to the rooftops of our houses and hang out there.
We understand that she might get killed by a predator, but we would rather...
Hi, Just an update on this topic: I've kept her outside (unprotected) 24/7 now for a few days* and she seems very happy about it. She's has a pond 10feet across and about a foot deep that she spends most of her time in or around. Now we are slowly feeding her less and less with hopes that she...
My 13 weeks old mallard duck has lately been showing signs of distress when she's in the pen over night. I made a 22sq.feet pen, where she has access to a tub of water to swim, she has grass, and dryfood and fresh water for drinking, plus a insulated sleeping quarters.
My question is; can I...
I should add that
It has been alone since hatching, but we have been very social with it.
It goes outside every day for some flying sessions
It has access to water to swim in 24/7.
The sleeping quarters are insulated
We're feeding it a vitamin rich food + some dried meal worms and slugs and...
Hey there,
My mallard, that now lives outside in a hut I build for it, has started to run in circles. It's clearly trying to reach something on its undertail. My thought was a tick or something like that. It's been doing this on and off now for a couple of days and seems to really bother the...
Its a ceramic bowl. We change the water a few times a day as it gets pretty messy.
Just after cleaning;
This is when I would change the water;
In addition we have recently started giving it baths in our shower, but we wash it down before so there should not be any soap residue in the...
Hey BYC community, I got a 5 weeks old duckling that started wheezing today. It's very subtle, and doesn't seem to affect its breathing. It's just a new sound that I worry about. It doesn't seem to have any other signs of illness. It eats and drinks, doesn't seem low on energy or have diarrhea...
Thanks! that is very helpful. I will get crafty and make a larger pen for it outside!
2 follow ups;
1; If I make a larger pen outside and give it plenty of exercise, is it okay for it to sleep in this box I already have for the next 4 weeks?
2; Do they swim in cold water already at week4...
Hi there, I hope I'm following the proper guidelines on making a thread. If not, I'm sorry I'm new here :)
I have a question about the size of the box that I keep my duckling in. My concern is that it might be too small.
A little backstory; I don't keep ducks or other birds. I found the egg...
Hi there!
Early April this year me and my housemates (I live in a 5 person collective in the Danish countryside) found an abandoned duck's egg and brought it in. We made sure to not go near it for 3 days in case the mother came back. We cared for the egg with a lot of knowledge from this...
