I have found with my spring hatched Sebastopols that the young female geese will play at building a nest and sometimes lay an egg. I have had several of mine do this. They
are not fertile as the ganders are not interested in the fall!
Pete,
Can't thank you enough for the wealth of information!
It will help those of us breeding Sebastopols (both colors AND white to colors) to establish a better breeding plan! I hope that those of you who are breeding Sebs
( let's include those who are allowing their geese to lay and hatch...
He is not only lovely in color he looks like he is going to have nice conformation. He has great "expression".
Can hardly wait to see him feathered out!
That is a splash. Grays are very dark at birth and have black bills. Do you know the colors of the parents? A white goose and gray gander produce male splashes and gray females. The opposite is true of gray goose to white gander.
Just reduce the amount of feed and increase the grazing OR cut grass and feed in the pen. Dandelions are excellent, but going by now. You can offer kale, cabbage ect!
If you bind the wing do it for only 24-48 hours. Exercise and stretching of the wing is needed. I have a very curly buff goose...
Hi, I'm in Maine and have been working with colored and splash Sebs for 6 years. I only sell gosling locally but will occasionally sell eggs, and sometimes I have adults to ship in the fall.
I keep several breeding pairs.
I'm in the same boat-LOL! It's hard raising a single gosling-they are very demanding! Being flock animals and spending every waking moment with their parents they expect the same of you! I had a very early baby and no duckling or chick for it's companion-just me! She is a love though! Good luck!
Mine start in Late Feb. and stop at the end of April. I would say they lay 5-6 weeks if you remove some of their eggs. Their goal is to lay 12+ eggs before they sit. First timers don't go by this rule! They may lay a bunch or few-they are just learning! Geese that share a nest also are all over...
Humidity should be at 80% the last 3 days and vents open.(Cottage Rose)
The vents to allow fresh air in at hatch-I'm finding that important! At least one vent should be open. I have read much advice to the contrary!
Here is some info I posted on a Seb forum. Please note Seb eggs are often smaller than other goose breeds and this can possibly make a difference.
After A LOT of incubation of Seb eggs over the last six years my opinion is to let the eggs dry down for the first few days (7-10) depending on the...
I don't know what the parents of your geese quality is, or pedigree , but Seb goslings from hatcheries generally run $45+
I suggest you post pics of the parents online and use common sense to price them for your area and the economy.
A good home is always taken into consideration when I place...
I'm on my sixth year hatching Seb eggs. I've had great luck with the Little Giant still air incubator. I also have a Brower Top Hatch, which I've had mixed results with. The Brower I have has fluctuated in temp.
What I like about the Lg is that it is very quiet and the eggs can be incubated in...
There is a big difference between controlled breeding's with records and pictures offered of the lineage, or purebred "who knows?" as to how you can price out your geese. Especially true in pertaining to colors and color to white breeding. If this will be your first time breeding, I would sell...
I don't believe there are any-I had BYC conversation with a Russian waterfowl owner last winter.
As far as bred for fighting I just think it's spring goosie male breeding hormones, and they are a big breed!

Yo ChickenHawk! Wish you the best of luck in your Seb endeavors!
I feel I must make a comment on this post. This is the bottom line for me (as far as breeding Sebs in the limited fashion that I do). In order to be able to breed these geese and
experiment with the colors and other aspects I have...
"When you first bought your sebastopols, did you buy the best of the best or were they birds that were decent?
Did you buy them because you wanted to show right off the get go or did you buy them because they were a beautiful bird, and you wanted to help the breed fight extinction?"
Chickenhwk...
