Depends on how heavy of a hawk presence you have. I use a thinner nylon 3/4" hole but I also toss weeds and leaves onto the netting so that the birds can easily see that there is a barrier.
I also bred a barred maran with an isa brown hoping for darker brown eggs that if I get any barred hens could then be used for a darker sex linked olive egger.
I got a decent green/olive egg breeding a black breasted red Araucana rooster over a PBR hen. This gave me a sex linked light-medium(depending on lighting) olive egger chicks
I know this is a few months old, but I got into breeding and hopefully some of what I know can help you.
This is an Araucana blue egg, next to a rir or PBR brown egg. My Araucana rooster (double Blue gene) mixed with the brown produced the medium olive green egg in the photo. My brown eggs...
Yeah that's what my research found, but I was hoping for pictures. Guess I just need to be patient for a few 2-6 more weeks. Thanks for the quick response though!
Hi, I know this is a very old thread and doesn't look like op has been on in years. I'm crossing Araucana with Rir and I was curious what color egg variety op got.
I just had a hen go broody and I have eggs in incubators with 7 days and 14 days remaining.
My question is what temps do you let broody hens have chicks? Seems a little cold to me but I guess it depends on if she's a good mom or not?
An ~2" thick styrofoam cooler, dual lightbulbs and water containers
Crate with water bottle heat sinks and to contain the crazy hatchlings. Dual thermometer/hydrometer at the back and mid with a controller sensor mid as well for turning the bulbs on/off
I have cold vent holes over by the water...
Thanks, I ended up keeping them in the purchased incubator and getting busy with them hatching early. Lol. I've got the incubating bug, so I'm sure more will.be on the way so any info/help will still be useful!
