I'm located between Newport and Waldport Oregon. My work schedule fluctuates but I'm sure we can find a day that would work for both of us. Yeah they love to eat and then lay down in the shade/sun :) . Haven't tried the surrogate fathering yet, my oldest capons are around 4-5 months of age. I...
It wasn't easy, this is my first year in on trying to caponize birds. During my first caponizing surgery I was so anxious and my adopted grandma made me finish she said "You got this bird opened up, if he dies during the procedure then he dies as a capon or die as a rooster if you chicken out!"...
I caponize my birds at 6-8 weeks of age.
In preparation to caponize I fast my birds for 24 hours in a wire rabbit cage with only water accessible and I try to remove any feathers over their ribs that'll be in the way.
I use a large board with four screws drilled in, I restrain their wings and...
An update, sold the Sicilian Buttercup cockerels before I could caponize them. However, I have recently caponized 15 cockerels of various ages. They are mostly barnyard mixes. I'll try to post results as they come. Birds probably won't be ready before winter so might wait until spring to offer...
Does anyone have bielefelders directly from Greenfire Farms? I heard they were the first imports of the breed into the US. Maybe they have better quality?
Well time will tell. Like I said earlier, I have silkie x easter egger mixes and they've produced a few silkies but most of them lack the vaulted skulls, and don't have fully feathered legs. My understanding is paint is a mix of black and dominant white. In my area dominant white silkies are...
It's possible that you have silkie "mutts". If they have silkie feathers then technically they are silkies just might not be up to APA standards, not really sure if you care about that. How old are they? Do you see any fluffy feathers coming in?
Amazing birds! They look like they have great structure for a great carcass. As long as I kept on selecting for birds with good size and build would those traits be fairly easy to keep in my flock? Yes I would love to see the EE crosses! Thank you so much!
Hello, anyone ever crossbreed Cornish X with heritage chickens? What were the results of the offspring? Does it make a difference if the Cornish X was the father or mother? How did the offspring do long-term? Decent meat and egg laying? I'm considering using a Cornish X to improve my flock's...
True, well I just felt my flock and my Silkie x Easter hen definitely felt soft but my Silkie x Easter roo I couldn't really feel any softness to them. But I know he's split because my hen has seven 8-week-old chicks from him and two of them are silkies. However I probably have some reduced...
Thank you! So the hens in my flock that I plan to use for this project are my old black Australorp, her daughter (55 Flowey Hen X Australorp), Speckled Sussex, Bielefelder, my Blue Copper Maran and maybe my standard size Black Cochin. My roosters in my project are of course my Silkie x Easter...
Welcome Danielle,
Your post has good timing! I'm beginning a breeding project on trying to develop dual purpose "silkies", essentially I want to breed a dual purpose bird that has good egg laying, silkie feathering, single combed, NO crest/vaulted skull, NO feathered legs, NO fibromelanosis...
Not sure if I want to put eggs under a tipsy capon. I've read about the capons needing to be forced to sit on the ground in the dark, sort of like putting chicks under a broody hen. Do you have capons?
