Introduction - The Silkie Lab (Danielle)

It's been fairly accurate. Regardless if they're split, you won't get many that are silkie feathered through Breeding back.
True, well I just felt my flock and my Silkie x Easter hen definitely felt soft but my Silkie x Easter roo I couldn't really feel any softness to them. But I know he's split because my hen has seven 8-week-old chicks from him and two of them are silkies. However I probably have some reduced sensation in my fingers due to a burn injury and the rooster wasn't too keen on being held.

Some just don't like being held much.

Hi everyone!

My name is Danielle and I am a Silkie Breeder and I own The Silkie Lab.

I'm in Michigan, and I created my own little business for DNA Testing Chickens, Geese, etc. I am only a few years into breeding silkies, so I wouldn't consider myself a full-blown breeder yet, but I'm working on Lavender, Lavender Laced, and Porcelain (Mille x Lavender).

I wanted to join here to not only discuss chickens and breeding, but also, my business. At The Silkie Lab, I do DNA Sex Testing on many species, along with Antigen testing for Mareks and ALV, and I test for the Lavender Gene. Within a month or so, I will also be releasing testing for the Blue Egg Gene, and the Recessive White Gene. I really enjoy studying genetics, and working in my lab, and looking out the window and seeing my Silkies :).

I just bought some silkie chicks and one has yellow skin and one foot has 4 toes. 🫤 Does this mean she's not a silkie. Her dad is a chocolate paint and mom is either a white or black paint.

It's possible that you have silkie "mutts". If they have silkie feathers then technically they are silkies just might not be up to APA standards, not really sure if you care about that. How old are they? Do you see any fluffy feathers coming in?

They're day 2 this morning so still just fluff balls
Well time will tell. Like I said earlier, I have silkie x easter egger mixes and they've produced a few silkies but most of them lack the vaulted skulls, and don't have fully feathered legs. My understanding is paint is a mix of black and dominant white. In my area dominant white silkies are next to non existent but they're out there, perhaps the breeder introduced dominant white into their line such as leghorn or Rhode island white. I would ask the person you got them from, like I said they could still be silkie just not up to APA standard.

Awesome! Do you know of any visual indicators for birds that are heterozygous for the silkie feathering gene?
Hi! Apologies for my delay here, I wasn't notified of more responses on my thread. I think your project sounds very exciting! Visually, there is no way to tell if they carry 1 copy of the Silkie gene or not. I will be developing a test for this, and will hopefully be releasing it within the next few months :) Please feel free to make an account on our website, thesilkielab.com and I can notify you once it's been released!

It does not mean that they are mutts/mixes :) The gene that causes the extra toes in silkies presents in many ways, and when breeding silkies you will always end up with some that don't have the right amount of toes or spacing. Regarding the color, paint is known to have pigment issues at hatch. Usually the skin will darken as they get older :)

Ohh! Very cool. So fascinating. My 3-4 month old silkie i just got has some very faint patterning... At first glance she/he looks black but there's a lot of light gray patches. I'll post a photo. (This one is not related to the chicks
