    'Wrinkled' egg?

Mrs. Feathers : This happened to one of my hens when she was stressed by the neighbour`s dog the day before she laid the egg. I did a bit of searching, including the great link that feathersnuggles provided. This apparently can happen if the bird is stressed. We have not had another one like...

Will my hen get off her chicks?

I would absolutely leave them with the mother, but make sure they are in a well protected (from draft) space. She will keep them warm. I would make food and drink easily accessible to her and the babies, she will take care of them much better than you can - no offense!

what does a flopped comb mean?

I have a RIR with a flopped comb. Looks like she's got her church hat on. :-)

what do i do with this stray dog?

My vote is definitely for shelter. I don't understand this enthusiasm about shooting living creatures. I would also check with the County Administration who is really responsible to pick it up, Animal Control or the Sheriff. Here, AC comes out if we have the dog tied up or wild animal in a...

Egg production going up when back on Layena

Wow, lots of interest in this since I posted last night! I have used a variety of feeds, both organic and non-organic. I absolutely prefer organic (I own a health food store!), but getting 3 eggs/day max from 11 hens was just not feasible. We are towards the bottom of the bag and we're...

    **our First Eggs!!!**

Congrats on your first eggs, it's so much fun! I have hear that giving the shells to the chickens can encourage them to eat the eggs... I would grind the shells very finely and mix it in their feed, if necessary. But if the shells are hard enough, there's no reason to give them shells.

Egg production going up when back on Layena

Yep, it's proved once again. My chickens increase egg production significantly when on Layena layer pellets. http://poultry.purinamills.com/OURPRODUCTS/Products/Layena/default.aspx I don't know what is different in this feed, and I'm really not thrilled because I want to feed my birds...

    'Wrinkled' egg?

Here's a picture: Thank you for the link about shell quality, Feathersnuggles - this looks like what they say is typical for a viral disease?! Unfortunately, I was just able to look at the page once... I wanted to go back to it but the site seems to be down! This egg is a few days old...

    'Wrinkled' egg?

It's hard - just like a regular egg, just very wrinkled.

    'Wrinkled' egg?

I have seen a few of them occasionally with my 'old' hens, but one of the adult hens I bought recently is consistently laying 'wrinkled' eggs. Does anyone know how this happens? I'll post a picture if it's not clear what I mean.

    Owned!!!!

Quote: Couldn't you have relocated it? I killed a black snake in the coop once with a shovel, and it made me sick for a long time... Now we put them in paper bags and drive them off to the marsh. I couldn't even begin to think of drowning a living, breathing creature.

Need to complain to someone who will understand (New-PART III, Page 5)

Oh, gosh, stupidity is so difficult to deal with. That is so sad. How did she seem about what happened?

    My rooster killed a hawk!

I'm not sure what he is. His dad was half bantam - very fierce guy! I think it's still coming through. Teresa, next to Small Daddy in the picture above, brought up the next generation, but Rambo (below) has some tufts/beard and some colors that makes me wonder if he's part Ameraucana and not...

    My rooster killed a hawk!

Here's a rear view of one that visited last summer. Yes, it is the chicken run fence he is sitting on. At that time, the runs were too small for him to try to get down in them. He hung around long enough on different fences for my son to take about 30 pictures. We will be hanging up tinfoil...

    My rooster killed a hawk!

Quote: Do you have pictures of it? What was the species? It was a Cooper's Hawk, like I wrote above. I didn't take pictures, but I have other pictures of Cooper Hawks that have visited over the years. Here's one:

    My rooster killed a hawk!

So should I have the hawk stuffed and hang on a trophy wall in the rooster's part of the coop? Does anyone have an idea if it could have been this hawk that took the head of my hen?

    My rooster killed a hawk!

There were no pictures. I left an open space so you would have to scroll down in order to get to the description of what happened to the hawk. I thought it was horrible. No, it's horrible what happened to the chicken, but I feel like if I had a cow and it killed a dog... It tilted my view of my...
