    Rabbit Housing Question

Thank you. I’ll leave it as-is then. Currently they will be next to each other with a plywood divider. The only gap is about 4” at the top of the divider that I left open just to allow air flow between them. Otherwise they will only be together or even see each other when I take that divider out.

    Rabbit Housing Question

I have a 2’x7’ total hardware cloth pen. In the middle of that is an enclosed coop area that is roughly 3’ and it has a divider to separate the ends of the pen and offer shelter to segregated animals. So, imagine 2’x7’ that is 2.5’ open with 1.5’ enclosed, and the other end is 1.5’ open with...

    Quail and Sod

I’d love to but I live in the Cherokee National Forest and we are covered in trees. There isn’t much grass to speak of.

    Quail and Sod

I guess that’s the million dollar question. Has anyone done it, and are there chemicals and insecticides in Lowe’s or Home Depot sod? I don’t care if they kill it as long as it’s a treat for them.

    Quail and Sod

Just curious…my quail are in a pen with a wire floor. Is there any reason I shouldn’t or couldn’t put a 12x12 piece of sod or two in the pen for them to enjoy some grass? I guess I’m worried about chemicals or insecticides that may hurt them, but would love to give them something to play on/in.

    Periodically Losing Quail

I did put some small hideaways in the run for them today. I think I’ll find some scrap plywood and add to what I have in the run to cover more of the wire for next winter.

    Periodically Losing Quail

I wish. We have lost a chicken here and there that I considered sending for necropsy. We haven’t been able to find a vet that would help.

    Periodically Losing Quail

There is a poop pan below them. It was also 60 degrees today, not sure if that’s still too cold or not. I’m not sure what to put below them that wouldn’t defeat the purpose of the wire and pan.

    Periodically Losing Quail

Got another one acting suspicious. She is shivering and her wings are droopy.

    Periodically Losing Quail

So it just kind of dawned on me…recently it seems like the males are crowing more and are more actively looking to mate. Despite no visible injuries on the hens that died, is it possible one of the males is killing them? My ratio of male to female was 2:11 before the last two deaths, and is now 2:9.

    Periodically Losing Quail

Thanks. I’m thinking that since one end is the coop, and the back side is the firewood storage, I only really need to cover the front. I’m thinking instead of tarp or plastic sheeting I’ll buy some of the plastic roofing type material that is see through and mount hooks for it so I can just put...

    Periodically Losing Quail

I have definitely missed the mark on small shelters. Looks like a trip to the dollar store for some bins to flip over in the run are in order.

    Periodically Losing Quail

I do think a wind barrier would be an upgrade but it has been warming recently and we really haven’t had any real wind to speak of in the past couple weeks. Went out this morning hoping I wouldn’t find any more and everyone seemed fine. I just can’t figure it out…if these birds were this fragile...

    Periodically Losing Quail

Hens haven’t laid all winter. I added a few hours of artificial light about 2 weeks ago and only got 1 egg a day for about the past week. Before that there were no eggs since it got cold. Poop looks normal. I’ve changed food a couple times over the last 6 months trying to find a better feed...

Just lost a second hen today. Makes no sense. Whatever is killing them is doing so VERY FAST.

    Periodically Losing Quail

It seems this winter was rough on my flock of quail. I started with about 18. I’m down to around 12 now. It started with one or two that just seemed to get sick, sit around, ruffle up, close their eyes and die. I started to suspect that even though they had an enclosed coop like shelter and...

    URGENT: Another Mite Question

Thanks. We are going to try egg in the morning. She has always been a picky eater even when it comes to treats. She turns her nose to banana or just about anything except….We mixed some scratch and mealworms in her regular feed and you can guess what she ate. At this point, I’m happy with any...
