Staying in nest box & not laying

The more I read about this behavior in other posts, the more it does sound like she is broody, although she is not agressive towards me in the box. Columbian Wyandottes are not supposed to be particularly broody, but whoops! Maybe this is typical 6 month behavior, as chics in the sun said...

Staying in nest box & not laying

sorry...should have typed that better, she is 6 months. old, not 36 months old. Should have typed "one of my three, 6 month old". Anyway, I hope it is just broodiness and not illness. She is making little low clucking noises, not growling, and doesn't mind if I pet her in the nest box or try...

Staying in nest box & not laying

One of my 3 6 month old CW's has been staying/sleeping in the nest box for about a week now...is no longer laying and is not pooping in the nest box, either. Her rear end is kinda vibrating slightly, if that makes sense. She does occasionally come out of the coop for scratch, but wants to go...

Teaching them to go into their coop at night

Thanks everyone for your comments and thoughts! Tonight, 2 of the 4 went into the coop on their own. I moved the "ladder" out a little more so it wasn't at such a steep angle. It took them a while, but 1 went right up the ladder and jumped into the coop. Then the 2nd one sort of just flew...

Teaching them to go into their coop at night

Thanks, Valentinebaby...we do have a 100watt red light that stays on all the time in the coop, since it is so cold and rainy lately, we feel they still need it. So yes, there is a light on in there.... Perhaps they will go back on their own if we give it enough time. I read another post that...

Teaching them to go into their coop at night

We have 4 Columbian Wyandottes that are 11 weeks old now, they have been in our elevated coop for several weeks. This weekend, we decided to let them "free range" in the backyard for the first time. We put up their "ladder" and they made attempts to come down it (but mostly just flew down)...

Just culled a day old chick

Our little "runt" chicken died also at about 3 weeks old and still the size of a 1 week old chick. There must be a name for this sort of thing, where they never grow like the others. I watched her take her last breath and it was heartbreaking. I assume they must have something wrong with...

    Runt???

Thank you, I hope she will catch up, too! Our concern is transferring them to the outside coop...she won't have her feathers yet like her siblings, so we will have to heat the coop outside I guess. Apparently, some chicks just mature slowly when compared to their "nestmates"...but it's scary...

    Runt???

My 3-week old Wyandottes have a runt among them! Seriously, 1 of them is still the same size as a 1-week old chick (1/2 the size of the other ones). She doesn't seem to be maturing at all, kinda like a pituitary gland problem or something. Do I just wait until she catches up with the rest of...

    Handling within first 24 hours?

Hi All, We decided to take the plunge into backyard chicken raising -- just received our first 5 chicks this morning....Columbian Wyandottes...and have lots of newbie questions of course! I read that you shouldn't really handle them within the first 24 hours to give them a chance to settle in...
