Did they know the gender? If they're sex linked they'll probably be the majesty maran, with a light dot on the top their head iirc. If the chick is all black it's probably a different maran. Pure black copper Marans are also a little harder to come by in general
Thank you everyone for your responses!
To answer some questions:
- they get limestone as calcium supplement
- she's not laying somewhere else (not free range)
- I live further south, and this started in September, and none of the other pullets have changed their laying habits, so I don't think...
Hello all!
I know questions like this are pretty common but I still wanted to ask in my own way.
I have 6 pullets. 2 EEs I bought in March, other 4 (OE and 3 Marans) were bought in late May. They were separate until late September when I managed to integrate them successfully. Up until that...
Thank you so much! I got a real kick out of reading yours as well. Just today I was doing some pythagorean math for another project and realized that for the coop I'd been using the formula wrong :barnie
I would love to see what you end up doing for the siding! On that topic I will note that...
When I was trying to rehome a rooster I had some success posting on Facebook, there are several groups just for rehoming roosters in the Bay area and NorCal
I named this article after the motto that emerged for this coop, the thing we said to each other every time we worked on it: "It's just a chicken coop!". Both hubby and I can be a little perfectionist, and we often found ourselves waffling about what would be the *best* thing to do. At those...
"According to the bill, it does not apply to a person who keeps or raises roosters for the purpose of food production, a public or private school registered with the state, a government-operated animal shelter, a nonprofit animal welfare organization or the Future Farmers of America or the State...
I agree! I've got some young EEs and this was really the tip off that I had a Cockerel.
This photo is of Kuro, my one Cockerel. You can see he's got much different coloring front to back, bigger comb, and if you look closely he's got red on his wings. I think the crucial point was the red came...
Hello all!
I have a sweet 10 wk old Easter Egger Cockerel named Kuro. He's already a good leader looking out for the pullets I've got, and I think he's pretty to boot. I'd keep him but I can't have a rooster in the city so he's got to go. If I can't rehome him before he starts crowing he's...
They're all beautiful! My EE roo is only about 10wks still, but so far he's friendly, inquisitive, and calm. No rooster behaviors except that he seems to be the most confident of the 3. I'm actually disappointed that he's gotta go, I'm sure he'll be lovely.
My understanding is that EE roosters...
I'm new to this too, but that first picture shows a pretty pronounced sickle feather or two on it's (his) tail. I don't think you ever get that with hens
