My girls toss their egg shells EVERYWHERE so I had to switch from a bowl to one of those no-waste feeder ports in a plastic bottle. With the power of s-hooks, it also just hangs on my cage ;)
Posting this here mostly as encouragement to future internet searchers, because when I searched "quail with a broken leg" everything was either "cull them" or "take them to the vet for splinting, enjoy the bill".
The situation: one of my little buggers managed to flush at just the right angle...
I also use the parakeet waterers. Until they're big enough that I'm refilling them multiple times a day, at which point they're big enough not to be total idiots about a bigger waterer. ;)
I actually like leaving the boys in to get a sense of how they'll treat the girls (and who is going to crow their head off even surrounded by ladies. Sorry loud boys, to freezer camp with you.)
So glad your birds are growing up well! May all the non-feather sexable ones end up as super plump...
Lash eggs are usually the sign of an infection in the reproductive track, so definitely keep an eye on whether you see more of those, but I've heard at least in chickens that they can live long relatively healthy lives even with the occasional lash egg.
Otherwise, agreed with everyone else that...
I would give it until it dries out/fluffs up to see if it can sort itself out. During my last hatch one of mine seemed very twisted up straight from the egg but I think they just sprained something trying to hatch, and they noticably improved over the next few hours as they were able to stretch...
Lucky! Definitely breed that one, and hope the temperament is hereditary. He's also GORGEOUS.
I, meanwhile, have three quail that are actively human-aggressive, because I'm pretty sure the person I got eggs from does zero screening for that. So yes, you have a very special bird, and I hope he...
I've only seen old threads about them, like you. And I haven't seen anyone recommending them as a source for eggs, either. Maybe someone else will know more.
Very Important Update: they have pecked the leaves off and are now running around with them. I cannot emphasize enough that these leaves are twice their size even wilted. This is HILARIOUS why can't I get a picture of it. Little squash flag bearers. 15/10 do recommend, now I know what to do when...
I've got a ton of N95s, so I use those when I'm going to be doing anything dusty (with re-use, I'm still using the same mask from when they were chicks). I figure there's no reason to mess with my lung health.
I just pulled a bunch of vines and baby squash from my garden paths; can I toss them to my quail? Absolutely no pesticides, of course. And they're some kind of unholy zucchini/melon hybrid that the squirrels planted, as far as I can tell
The poop looks fine to me, but I'm not as experienced there. Looks like some mine have had and none of them are ill (it's normal for them to look a little strange when the birds are stressed). She's definitely not egg bound if she's pooping, though, so that's one worry off your list!
Be careful...
That looks like scalping by an overeager rooster--is the other quail a male? Because the boys that do that to their girls are, unfortunately, not keepers (and the usual recommended ratio is 1 boy to 5 or more hens, to reduce the chances of injury).
If you haven't already, make sure to get some...
Why are you keeping them if you don't like them? And more to the point, why are you complaining about it on someone else's bird appreciation thread?
Love the pictures, Susan and the farmer90, those are such pretty color morphs!
Yeah, that cage height shouldn't be a problem. I would maybe dump out their feeder and double check for any wet spots/anything suspicious, just to rule out mold (and I assume their extra feed is being stored somewhere dry, and isn't a brand new bag that might be introducing new variables.) In...
I personally prefer this article: https://www.tillysnest.com/2015/12/non-surgical-bumblefoot-treatment-html/
I usually let them soak for around 30 minutes instead of 10 though, the longer they soak the easier the scabs come off!
As for future prevention, check for any wet areas in your cage...
