Lady Spot is a wild mallard mix with Swedish blue in her that flew in a few months ago. My guys had started nesting in their run but never went broody so I was using it as an easy way to collect some of their eggs. Then Lady Spot found the nest and started laying in it and for a few days I was...
Got my latest update for yall!
Starting with this morning, Lady Spot decided it was time to take her babies down to the lake and leave the nest. She had 2 mallards, 2 Swedish, and 2 of our stolen runner eggs hatch. For whatever reason she originally went towards our house with her babies so...
Gimmie your chicks are adorable!! Catching up on your progress has been nice now that we are mostly chilling over here lol. Glad I joined you for this fun adventure!!!
Morning everyone! Sorry for leaving it on a cliffhanger lol, I ended up staying up another hour and a half and finally ended up helping it zip. I could see in the shell so I had waited till the veins had been absorbed then just made a ring of small cracks with my tweezers before moisturizing the...
This last baby is still not ready to hatch and I’m about to tag out with the wife. Went ahead and moved the others downstairs into the brooder and from that I saw what I thought was a black runner is actually another Swedish runner taking after their father!
A black runner! Woo! Down to my last straggler, still working on absorbing its yolk from the looks of it. Also got these 2 migrated down and into the brooder
What a cutie! It’s begun!!! So excited for you lol
About an hour ago we had this little one hatch, phone died before I could give the update.
Got the first runner fluffed up and brought down to the brooder.
Working on adjusting the heat lamp atm since it’s going to get down to 50 tonight...
Here’s the runner from earlier! The mallards needed to be moved to the brooder, they were starting to trample the eggs a bit with their playing around now that they’ve had almost a day’s head start 😂 about 10 min after that picture of the runner we had this little one come sliding out.
Got 2...
Excited to see the progress on all of your chicks pipping!!
We just had our first runner baby come sliding out after we finished dinner! All the others have now externally pipped with a couple of them looking about ready to start zipping. Just gotta sit on my hands and let them do their thing 😂
My suspicions were correct and a mallard definitely laid eggs in my runners nest, 4&5 were the eggs I started getting suspicious of and sure enough they are from that mallard mix that looks like a Swedish.
Should be nothing but up and running now though!
Yea I think I got a bit too relaxed about it all since I had no development issues the entire time. Looking stuff up about double yolkers had so many bad stories of things going horribly wrong I just figured I was getting lucky I guess but at least I learned from it all.
Annnd yea I have to...
They didn't absorb any of the yolks it appeared. While frantically looking stuff up last night to see if I could understand how it all works in the egg I remember something saying they didn't start absorbing it till they got air. Since I was testing out separating the membranes I went ahead and...
Well despite my efforts to help them internally pip the twins didn’t make it. One was facing inwards in between them so not sure if I would have been able to do anything for that one. The larger of the two had their head more towards the middle of the egg still away from the air pocket.
When I...
is it normal for so many to quit with chickens? really sad to see some make it this far and not be able to reach freedom from the shell.
My night time update is that 4 and 5 were not early, I just got the date wrong I guess. All have internally pipped except for double bubble but there are...
probably spooked her when you were sneaking her food around the nest. not an eggspert but she probably deemed the spot unsafe once you started worrying about her too much and started poking around. either way she wouldn't have even started incubating those eggs till there were at least 10+ so if...
Well 5 has internally pipped and 4 is close behind it seems, those were the 2 eggs I had grabbed out of the nest to add to my numbers and rotate them out since they were the oldest in the back. All the other eggs were the ones my guys had been laying along the lake's edge and once we had 18 in...
These are my eggs! All this started on a whim from getting the double yolker but so far the only quitters I’ve had were some eggs I was slotting into my spare spots from a feral pekin’s nest nearby that had abandoned it when we had a cold front come through a month ago. Of those eggs only one...
