enrichment/enclosure for indoor setup (plants, toys, etc)

It saddens me so deeply that every indoor chicken/quail conversation turns into this, I think we need our own section of the site, like the meat bird people have. But I won’t be here to see it, this site is obviously not for people like me, and I respect that.

Oh, don’t get me started, I’ll hijack this post! :lau if I haven’t already!

    Coccidia

Yeah, that’s why I switched to paper sheets for my indoor birds, but that’s not really applicable here! Unless you change tarps or something every day, now that’s an idea!

Well, if you want them healthy…

It’s spot clean daily, change out monthly, for the best results.

Pine is toxic due to the scent oils, if you absolutely have to use wood shavings, use aspen, but even then, sand grows less bacteria overall.

enrichment/enclosure for indoor setup (plants, toys, etc)

In my unpopular opinion? Nature sucks. It’s all parasites and yuck, I like my sanitized little bird world, I’m weird. But I’ve never noticed any signs of stress in them, not one feather plucked, they and their happiness always comes first, so whatever I’m doing has to somewhat be close to right...

I wonder that, too, and that’s why I try to suggest it now on any rooster behavioral post I see lately, it’s unorthodox, and I do get backlash, but if it works, it works. I think people have a hard time not anthropomorphizing, putting themselves in the bird’s shoes and feeling bad for them...

2 day old chick keeps swallowing

That looks good. I’d definitely get them into something bigger as they grow, but I’m sure you’ve got it handled. Honestly, if nothing else seems wrong with the chick, I wouldn’t worry too much, I’d keep checking the crop to see if it’s filling and emptying like normal in the morning and whatnot...

    Same-sex aviary? Conflicting information online.

Thank you! If I may ask, my enclosure is a “pop-up” bed mosquito net, and since I won’t have bars to attach perches to, I plan on getting these preserved manzanita trees with bases that are meant for displays to use as perches, they’re maybe 36” tall and 18” to 24” wide, and I’ll get two, one on...

Good, pine shavings are toxic anyways with the scent oils, but that rules that out.

    Rocco needs a new home

If you aren’t breeding him, then what’s he for, decoration? He just gets to harass the hens for nothing? I’d be wary of anyone who wants what he’s described as, like I said, he’ll probably end up a fighting bird, and that’s no life.

I’d gently feel the crop for anything strange, too. What are you using for brooder flooring?

    First chicken coop build

16’x50’ covered run? Oh, that’s just plain beautiful. Bravo.

2 day old chick keeps swallowing

Is it possible that something’s stuck in it’s mouth? I’d check. And is the electrolyte water their only water source? What probiotic powder did you use? And I wouldn’t mix grit with feed, they pick their own grit when they need it, they might get too much if it’s always in their feed. And they...

Chicken with many toes (11 toes)

Yes, he’ll be perfectly fine. The extra toes are from his silkie parentage, as Mystic Onyx’s are silkie crosses, and he’ll have no trouble living his chicken life to the fullest.

    Same-sex aviary? Conflicting information online.

Hello all, I’ve had a growing interest in adding some smaller non-ground birds into my life, and I was looking into society finches. My enclosure would be indoors, and 79”Lx71”Wx59”H, is it possible to have only all females together? I don’t plan on breeding. What are the pros and cons? How many...

    A little pigeon appreciation post

Sadly, it looks like where I live doesn’t allow ground doves legally, but I might be able to get a permit. If I were to choose a different species, what should I choose if I were to go with that enclosure? And how many should I have for them to be happy? I really like spoiling my birds, and I’d...
