I've had my 4 rescue pigeons for about 2 months now, and I just LOVE having them. This is a little pigeon appreciation post, in case anyone is considering adding pigeons to their aviary.

I don't know a lot about their backstory, I just know they were pet pigeons, and they were surrendered by the owners family after the owner had suddenly passed away.

They are rock pigeons, 2 girls and 2 boys, and since being with us they have bonded into 2 pairs, it's so sweet.

The two boys fly around collecting sticks for their nests... it's quite entertaining watching them walk around with sticks all day.

They surprisingly spend a LOT of time walking around on the ground, visiting with the chickens, and they interact and mingle with the flock without any issues. I don't know if my chickens are just super chill, but I was surprised at how well they integrated. Of course, if you are thinking about integrating species, make sure you do it carefully, and that you read up on quarantining properly, and what sorts of diseases can be shared.

But overall, they have blended in perfectly with my flock.

This is Norman & Lucy in their nest. They're not the best nest builders (lol) but they do snuggle up in there together and its pretty adorable.

Norman is the only one who has let me hold him so far, and it was somewhat reluctantly. I don't think they were handled much in their former life, but I am hoping they will come around.

I have really enjoyed having them around!

Show me your pigeons & doves! :)

I would love to have pigeons!

Same! I’ve looked into wild ground doves before, since they’re similar to quail, my niche, I wonder how their care would overlap? Intresting to see how the pigeons spend lots of time on the ground, they are cliff-dwellers, so I imagine they have better feet for walking than most flighted birds.

Doves are very very easy to care for as long as they have a good set-up. Out of all the let's I own they are friendliest and calmest. 😁

Good to hear! How do you and the others think the common ground dove’d fair in a 79”Lx71”Wx59”H enclosure? I’d have a paper sheet bottom, and could get a 48” tall, 24” wide, dead manzanita tree on a stand in there, since it looks like they do fly into trees occasionally.

How many would you get? Doves do go up in trees to nest and sleep. That might work...for a couple 🕊️

Sadly, it looks like where I live doesn’t allow ground doves legally, but I might be able to get a permit. If I were to choose a different species, what should I choose if I were to go with that enclosure? And how many should I have for them to be happy? I really like spoiling my birds, and I’d only want them if this setup would be almost too much for them!

I would say 2 or 3. I have Eurasian collared doves and I really love them. Very calm and sometimes even come in and sit on my bed😍
