The youngsters are now five weeks old and starting to look like miniature chickens. The older girls are constantly chasing them around, guess they're keeping them in line.
As a new "chicken tender", it's fun watching them all grow and develop personalities. I've almost forgotten that there was a...
A week further along now, and the chicks are growing and doing well. The little maran developed a case of "pasty butt" and we have been dealing with that for about four days now. I keep checking her as often as I can and seem to be staying on top of things. She is the smallest of the four...
Fell victim to chicken math over the weekend and acquired three Rhode Island Red babies and on Copper Maran cross. I wouldn't have had the knowledge to even begin this process without all the great information on this forum.
I used a lot of things I already had on hand to carve out a corner of...
Watered, weeded, put on my honeybee outfit and pollinated the tomato blossoms. Gotta add a couple more lines to the irrigation system a little later and add some bedding to the worm bin..
Giving them a little treat before bedtime. A few mealworms for a snack and they are ready to coop up(sorta). The antics these three can play just over going to bed...
My little gray is doing much better after a couple days of using the diluted chlorine dioxide. I also added some DE in the coop and run. I noticed the local ant population is becoming active in our yard and I'm wondering if she might have got a few ant bites that caused the irritation. NM fire...
They are 7 weeks old. I've been feeding them Nature's Best Organic Chick Starter Crumble. Their analysis states not less than 20% protein. They are growing quite a bit. They were 5 weeks old when they came to me and have more than doubled in size in the last couple weeks.
My littlest one is showing an irritated bottom this evening. I mixed a very diluted solution of chlorine dioxide and distilled water and lightly sprayed the affected area. Also added 3 ml of ClO2 to their fresh water this evening. Not sure if she's being picked on by the other two or something...
Spoke with the lady I got them from today. Likely cross bred orps with marans, but will get confirmation on that in a day or so.
My darker one looks similar to your little one there.
I've only had my three Orpington girls a couple of weeks. They are doing well, and growing so fast! I do believe they have doubled in size already.
They were five weeks old when I brought them home. The first few days they just hung out in the coop and didn't venture outside.
Once they found...
Good morning and welcome. Freshly hatched NM member here, situated on the mesa west of the Organ mountains. I am also very new at looking after chickens(3 Orpingtons, now six weeks), and learning as I go. This is a great online community, full of information and helpful people. Good luck...
Got the girls to venture out of the coop for the first time today. They took some coaxing. I sat on the ground and laid a trail of crumble down the ramp that led to a tray with more crumble in it. They followed the trail then ate their fill and began to explore their run for the first time...
I did exactly that after taking that photo, and only made use of it the first night. They made it through their second night, without it, just fine. I wasn't 100% comfortable with that idea to begin with.
