6 month old Buff Brahma Sexing

Hi everyone, I bought a sexed Buff Brahma hen who I am now thinking may be a male? Fuzz (his/her name) is confusing me a lot. Fuzz is about six months old, hasn’t laid any eggs, and we haven’t heard any crowing. But Fuzz also has prominent saddle feathers and hackle feathers. Anyone with more...

Pecking Injury - Temporary Loss of Bloodflow

Hi everyone We went away for the holiday and when we returned we saw one of our hens had a decently deep wound next to her ear. Based on the shape of the cut we’re guessing someone pecked her pretty bad. Originally it was very swollen and the lower part of her earlobe was dark purple like it...

    Rooster Hurting Hens?

Hi everyone, Sorry for the delay. He had started calming down and seemed fine but now he is amping up again and will lunge for the girls. He is just about six months and so are the pullets he came in with. We have them in a flock with hens who are over a year old though and at first they...

Moisture in Coop - Considering Pellets

Sorry for the confusion, I accidentally wrote hay, but we use straw. We use only straw as our bedding material. Won’t paper/cardboard be far less effective at absorbing moisture and keeping the coop dry? Do you have any recommendations for mouse proof feeders? Thanks!

Moisture in Coop - Considering Pellets

Thanks for the advice. The coop is larger than shown in the picture (that was just a quick pic I was able to get). We have several roosting spots, nesting boxes, and one window covered in hardware cloth on the opposite wall from all the roosting spots. We also have a double door system for the...

Moisture in Coop - Considering Pellets

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a basic raised wooden chicken coop. It’s hard to get good pictures right now because it’s so cold and snowy outside, but here is one (we have roosting and nesting boxes off to the side). The only ventilation options we have is a small window we can crack (not...

Moisture in Coop - Considering Pellets

This is a long post but I would love some advice as I’ve found myself in a cold wet mousey dilemma. Winter has set in and brought snow with it. Something (maybe my chickens tracking in snow mixed with the continual snow falling) is causing the coop to get very moist. We use straw bedding because...

    Bonding new LGD in winter

I thought about doing something like that or clearing a space in our garage and adding a pen and then taking a few chickens out at a time and practicing with my pup in there. My concern was it might be too stressful on the chickens to be caught and lugged back and forth all the time just to be...

    Bonding new LGD in winter

Any advice on how to keep bonding my LGD pup to the chickens in the winter would be much appreciated! The chickens don’t like going out in the snow and rarely do.

    Hen with nasty butt area!

Does that help? Also does it hurt her? For some reason I thought they had feeling in their feathers and you couldn’t trim them unless doing it very carefully?

    Hen with nasty butt area!

I don’t know if this helps, but I’m starting to think some chickens are just dirty like that or maybe have a sensitive stomach? I have a few in my flock who consistently always seem to have a dirty butts like that, but otherwise seem perfectly healthy. I even took stool samples to the vet to get...

    Bonding new LGD in winter

Hi everyone I have a young LGD who is about six months old. He’s been progressing pretty well with poultry training, but now that winter has set in all my chickens are staying in their coop and out of the snow so he rarely sees them. Does anyone have advice on how to continue training...
