    FIRST EGG!!!

Is the depth of the color determined by their nutrients and/or diet? I'm going to share the chart with my neighbor, she has 18 of various breeds, including some BCM.

    FIRST EGG!!!

Thank you for the chart! I had no idea there was such science involved with the Marans! I will definitely keep track and use the chart as well!

    FIRST EGG!!!

I knew it was on the way because FeatherToe was the first to build a nest. It was my husband's idea to put the toy wood lemon in there, I guess it worked lol.

Behavior of 5 1/2 month old hens and training for egg laying.

My 3 BCM breed hens seem to be happy & healthy. They eat layer feed, get a few fruits & veggies occasionally for 'treats'. They are out in a protected yard foraging most of the day. Most recently, when they hear me open the back door or see me coming outside; they all run toward me clucking; I...

Thank you! They are usually pacing at the door waiting for me to let them out lol!

How to make nesting boxes more attractive to your hens?

I have 3 hens that free range most of the day. They have a large coop, but not a run yet. Can I still do this by just letting them out later in the day?

Best dust bath to provide? Mite prevention?

There is already DE & lime in the coop anyway so I totally agree! 👍

What did you do in the garden today?

Helped my 3 y/o granddaughter plant some carrot & radish seed tapes and some cauliflower & tomato seeds in the raised beds. We planted chives, coneflower and forget me not seeds around the trees next to the coop so the chicks may enjoy them. I'm just getting her used to planting, watering and...

Best dust bath to provide? Mite prevention?

I live in central Florida, close to beaches. Our native 'dirt' here is basically what I call sand-dirt or dirty sand. My girls just dig a hole in the coop (which already has FS Lime and DE within it) and that's where they dust bathe.

    Dust bath

I have a neighbor who puts DE in her dogs' food to prevent intestinal parasites/worms.

Things you wish you could say

Being a nurse for my entire working life, I have learned to be extremely diplomatic. However I have also learned how to be extremely snarky....without anyone catching on 😆

    First Saturday Lime

I do layer bedding. I pick out big chunks of poop, spread the grass cuttings & straw, then I dust the whole floor with DE & First Saturday Lime. I make a separate dust bath for my hens with wood ash, DE, 1st Saturday Lime and assorted herbs. I dust the whole outside of the coop with the 1st Sat...

    First Saturday Lime

I do. My neighbor told me about it. She has bunnies, chickens, dogs and puppies. She has treated her coop, yard and puppy area on her back porch. OUR fly population has decreased. I ordered some as well for my chicken coop and yard. Wow, what a difference! Big decrease in flies and mosquitos (...

Flies in yard, not coop or run

Try Saturday Lime. I just recently found out about this from my neighbor, who has 3x the amount of chickens as I do, plus dogs, and puppies on her back porch. She treated her entire yard and coop and not only do I not smell the puppy poop but the flies have decreased a lot! It is safe around...
