    Heat Lamp Extension Cord length

Nope! Just snap the lid on and sit it on the ground. I've never had any issues, even is the wind flips them around or with snow melt.

    Cinnamon spice add to food?

I did a ton of research previously because my conures and budgies will get snacks off of our foods, especially banana bread. Because of said research, I only use Ceylon cinnamon now as it's true cinnamon. I'm sorry that I don't remember the exact why but the other cinnamons can be bad/dangerous...

    Heat Lamp Extension Cord length

Just adding my two cents for the connection of two extention cords it there is one. I get the cheap/disposable ziplock containers and cut a notch out of the base on either side that the cords can fit into. The plugs are in the container with the lid on and safe from rain. I've done this for...

Eggs brittle and yolks falling apart

I keep a disposable roasting pan that I put egg shells in. Once it is full, I bake on low (200°F) just to dry them completely out. Then I use a mortar and pestle the crush them. They are in small pieces but definitely not powder, more like crumble. I have three different calcium dispensers, one...

Help Wanted: Chicken Breed Identification Specialist

I have two that came from Hoovers as BCM. Neither have any copper at all. They are both black with the iridescence sheen. One has sooo many feathers on her feet we named her Rosy (female hobbit from LOTR.) The other has three tiny leg feathers total. I also have a cream legbar from Hoovers. Her...

    Rescued chicken in nyc

It's never too late to get her a couple friends! That being said, definitely wait until the all clear from the vet. The way she is standing with her neck pulled in doesn't show she is feeling well. She can absolutely get her friends sick depending on what's wrong. Healthy hens will pick on sick...

6 week old barred rock chicks gender

I would expect way more comb development at 18 weeks if either were roos. I would say they are definitely hens. If they are mixed (which they clearly seem to be) you can't really go by if one has the double barring genes of a roo. I just got had on breeds of hatching eggs. One of the blue eggs...

Comment by 'bravecoconut' in article 'Do Chickens Have Feelings?'

I can't fathom how anyone can spend more than five minutes with a chicken and question if they have feelings, thoughts, or emotions. This is a great explanation of such. I smile every single time one (or many!) of my flock come running to me looking like toddlers that don't have knees! Yes, it's...

Help. At a loss...very sick hen!

Do you have her on cedar shavings? Thats what the poop in the picture looks to be on. Cedar is toxic to chickens and numerous other animals. The aromatic oils can cause a host of problems, not just respiratory.

    Lethargy, thin, wobbly, progressive

Just an update. I have given this chicken everything I and everyone else can think of. Vitamin E, b-complex, amoxicillin, nutridrench, you name it. She is still happily eating and drinking and is not lethargic anymore. She is still unable to walk properly. She has one leg that she is still down...

    Feeling Bad

Feeling bad just means you are human and have a heart. It's okay to feel just as it's okay to protect your flock. I'm sorry you had to do this. I'm glad most of your girls are okay.

Switched food to Kalmbach Full Plume 20% protein

You can try mixing the old with the new and slowly reducing the amount of old in the mix. You can also try making it into a mash. Anything new is scary to any bird. They generally won't starve themselves to death though. They should eventually come around.

    Is my rooster getting eaten??

A camera in to coop will show you lots of things to include rats/mice, bullying, or him wacking his head on something. I would look hard for mites and/or lice as well.

Question of the Day - Thursday, October 23rd, 2025

Lady Lucy Von Bockenston XIV Baroness of all This and That She's an Australorp that a lady knocked on my door and begged me to take along with a handful of others. I couldn't say no. My husband and oldest son named her.

    Lethargy, thin, wobbly, progressive

I just went out and checked on her. She ate and drank fine. I did catch her sitting back on her hocks like the previous one I lost. She did get back up to walk on her feet but is even more wobbly. It's windy here and a wind gust of maybe fifteen toppled her over. That of course could be because...

    Lethargy, thin, wobbly, progressive

She was just switched over to these feeds recently as she is coming into lay. The other two legbars I have are just 6½ weeks old that I hatched. Both those feeds state they are safe for roos and have a lower calcium. Henhouse has the calcium not built into the pelleted part of the feed so, in...

Everything I'm reading about the enroflixacin is saying that their eggs will never be safe for human consumption again. I guess I'm going with amoxicillin. Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it!

Forgot to say her abdomen is also normal. No water belly. I can palpate without any distress from her and do not feel anything unusual. She doesn't have any darkening of her comb points.

No coccidiosis. I honestly haven't had any issues issues with this flock for the two years that I've had them. I had her sister killed by the hens that were here when we moved in. They were in their tender basket (pullet pen) and my son didn't close it. They got loose and these hens are vicious...
