I have a white leghorn that has been laying everyday for about a week and a half, and today she was in her nesting box for a bit, and then I heard her "layed an egg" call, but there was nothing in the box, and this is about the time of day that she lays.
She was in there for about 30 minutes...
The only thing the city of dallas website really states is that you must have atleast 3 acres of land for agricultural production and coop must be 20 feet from adjacent property line, but I don't think 2 chickens as pets would mean agricultural production.
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any information about the laws concerning chickens in Dallas, as pets?
The City of Dallas website is not very helpful, it states no roosters, and that's about all I could find.
Any info would be helpful, thanks in advance!
My girls love yogurt, the plain kind. Somtimes when introducing new treats, they seem standoff-ish, but maybe dip their beaks in, to have them try it. Or your chickens just may not like yogurt.
Here is a thread that has a lot of useful information about treats...
I just asked someone at my local feed store the same thing yesterday, as I had a girl (Americauna) die on Thursday from what I believe was being eggbound, she had only laid one egg before then on Tuesday, and was acting like she was going to lay another, but died later that evening.
The woman...
I have no idea, I just started researching all this "eggbound"ness today, because I thought her behavior was odd, these are my first pet chickens, so I'm kinda learning as I go.
I just feel so bad, what a horrible way to die! And that's alllll I could think about, when are they going to lay...
Nevermind, I'm quite shocked....
I went to check on them, and she was dead on her back. I did not expect that, and I have no idea what happened. The other two were fine, they had all eaten the food and snacks, no blood or wounds.
This really freakin sucks.
Thanks in advance for all the advice so far, its appreciated
So we had our first egg on Tuesday, and today, Thursday, she acted the same way, "bawk"ing, and getting into her nest, and fixing it up, staying in there for a while, but no eggs. I finally just opened the door to the pen so she...
I've had eggs that were fresh before, and they had a bright orange yolk, and I've heard from many sources that the orange color is a good thing.
Our first egg was the same yellow as the store bought eggs. Does this mean that something is missing from their diet?
They free range all day.
Yeah, I went and put the covers on the kitty litter containers, and faced them away from everything, for more privacy. I feel bad that I wasn't prepared, I just didn't think it would be so soon.
Thanks all, for the answers!!
So, I had taken the chicken that was making all the noise this morning, and put her in our dog's kennel, placed her in the bathroom where it was quiet and dark with food and water, because I still wasn't quite sure what was wrong.
A few hours later, this is what I found....
I feel soo...
Thank you everyone.
While that's exciting to me, I really hope the neighbors don't mind.
Should the kitty litter boxes be okay? Should I make something more private?
Will they cluck like this from now on? All the time?
I don't see any of the "spurs" , atleast from pictures I've found online, and he/she doesn't really crow.
And most pictures I have found online, have the hen with the big comb that falls over, and the rooster with the comb standing up.
Still would like more opinions though. Yikes!
Someone pointed out that my supposed hen's comb was really big for 20 weeks of age.
I think she is a white leghorn, the sign said Ideal 256 when I bought her...
So the verdict. Is my "she" a "he" ??
