Just want to let everyone know the hen is still alive and getting better. She is even back to laying. I don't know if her feathers will ever grow back, but I think she is going to make it.
And Zac has a fan club, which he deserves.
Quote:
The chickens can't get into the backyard unless they can find the little dogs' escape hole in back. Nor could the little dogs drag a chicken through it.
The big dogs can't get out to the chickens in front.
When I got my hens as chicks, I kept the brooder in the same room with the...
I'm letting nature take it's course. I kept her covered in with the feed sack until she walked out of it this morning. Her back is already starting to dry and scab up. She even laid an egg. I took pictures of her and once I figure out tonight how to post one I will.
I guess the hours of Zac...
I would like to tell you a story of my pit bull, Zac, and one of my laying hens. It's not what you are all thinking.
Yesterday, morning I let my pack of dogs out. The large dogs are fenced in the back, (Lady and Lugh, both German Shepherds, and Zac, my year old Pit bull). The 2 small...
The reason nature feeds baby chicks bugs is because they are very easy to digest.
Grit is needed more for corn, grasses, seeds and grains. But it doesn't hurt to have grit available, they will pick it up when they need to. Just don't give so much that they eat that instead of feed.
I hold...
If you have access to CO2, like they use for soda pop machines, that's what my vet recommended. But not everyone has that handy. Another way might be just to freeze them, they pretty much just go to sleep.
I have no idea what would hurt more, if any at all, having my head chopped off...

I wrote to Martha this morning. Maybe she can help us out to get our costs covered. Let's face it, this could be a PR nightmare if she doesn't and I don't want trouble for either her or MM. But I will not be ignored and swept under the carpet.
I was reading Martha's book on business when...
I'm not sure, I'm not an expert. But when I had chickens before and I let the hens brood their own chicks, as soon as they were out of the nest they pecked at everything.
Here's one thought, could the brooder have actually have been too big and didn't force the group to bond?
Are you giving...
The Ideal chicks I got in a day after the MM chicks are doing great. They were housed with the MM chicks from their first minute here and not a single one came down with what the MM chicks had. I ordered different types from each hatchery so I would be able to tell which ones I got where...
Could be stress, pecking order, even misisng vitamins or minerals.
Mine started doing that the other day so I added some fresh hay to their brooder (they are 4 weeks). At first they were scared but soon found out how much fun it was to scratch and pull. I also separated the ones getting...
Your right, back to the topic.
I sent chicks to UW - no results yet, they want to wait for cultures.
If I can remember, Chicks have been sent in for testing in WI, MN, PA, OR, NC, and ME. Is there anyone else or did I add anyone by mistake?
Whether or not your state requires this or other diseases to be reported is probably based on # of commercial growers in your state.
My guess that the USDA would want a report from your state might be to track any diseases and their progression or decline.
Does that make sense?
The following suspected diseases must be reported to either the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection's Animal Health Division, or to the state office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services within ten days after finding evidence...
I plan to get mine out to the barn this weekend. Outdoors might be hard right now, the snow is over the chicks head.
I'd like to pass on a little story of natures balance.
Our neighbor thought any fox is a bad fox, so he started shooting them. The following year his barn was infested with...
Just talked to my vet. UW is doing full cultures before they say what it is. This could take another week or so. The bacteria cultures all came back lower or within normal ranges for brooder chicks.
She is under the belief that the chicks that show NO signs should be kept. I am not a...
Last night my husband put down the chicks that showed the obvious signs. None were even close to size as the hardy gang. This was actually a relief. It felt good going into the brooder room and seeing chicks acting as chicks and and not having to deal with the sick ones. Now the only...

Most of mine are getting better. I'm wondering if this is what I can expect also? I don't think these chicks are going to make very healthy chickens. They are only about 1/3 the size they should be and even some that look like they are only a week old.
No matter what the tests show, I...
As long as mine could get to food and water they survived. Out of the 24 chicks of mine that have come down sick, only 2 died, except for the 5 donated to science to find out what this is. The rest are recovering but are not nearly as strong as the normal chicks.
I used the mason jar...
