    South Central Kentucky Thread!

I like the idea of a thread for chicken enthusiasts closer to my flock in Owensboro. I have a mixed flock of ameraucanas and welsummers, one golden comet, and a speckled sussex that I raised from a chick. I'm thinking about adding one or two rare breeds and focusing on those, but I haven't yet...

    Raw Milk

I bought a "share" in a dairy cow on a local farm and have been drinking the raw milk for more than a year now. It is sweet and good. I never liked milk before I started drinking raw milk. And my daughter will no longer drink milk at her school cafeteria. She says it tastes nasty compared to the...

Thanks, Got dottes, for the lovely EE girls. I've named them Gypsy and Slate. I put them in the coop in their own area protected from the 4 older girls. They were drinking and eating and looking around, so I think they are settling in nicely.

Quote: How about the blue water tower around 4:00? I can't stay later than that. It's a 2.5 hour drive back home (I'm just north of Lexington). $5 each for the EEs. I have welsummers but need to hold onto them for my egg customers. I'll bring 5 EEs so you can choose who you would like. I...

Thanks for the warning! It's a new heater that shuts off when it tips over. We have it sitting up off the floor of the coop, and my husband wired it to the wall to stabilize it should the chickens somehow knock up against it. They would have to fly up and into the heater -- but who knows what...

Hi! I have a small backyard flock -- 2 Golden Comets, 1 Rhode Island Red, and a Black Star cross. They are averaging 3 eggs per day. This morning, I got 4 eggs. So the little sisters are doing quite well. I have a small heater and a heat lamp in their coop for fear my poor chickens will freeze...

    Hello from Ohio

Welcome from a newbie in Kentucky! I look forward to learning from your experience. I, too, keep my 4 girls in a pen for fear of predators, but the pen is very large. It started as a 10x50 pen, but we enlarged it this weekend because I want to add 2 or 3 more hens. I think we added about another...
