Mine will be backyard for awhile at least. I have a neighbour 2 doors down who just got a dog she lets run loose (yay!) Then, on the other side of her is a chicken flock that are allowed to range most of the year.

I want to see how things go before I let mine wander a bit. They will always sleep in the coop though since we will have huge predator issues if they don't.

Oh, I also have a Husky that is on a tie out in an area the chickens would have access to...I will need to figure something with her also. She is getting older and slowing down but, I'm sure she'd still go after one that got inside her tie-out area. Though, I am kind of hoping she will be ok with them. She has always been fine with our house cats so maybe I can acclimate her to the chickens

I have always free ranged my chickens but this latest batch is in a very large covered pen because I have way to many hawks of all kinds and eagles. I got so tired of my chickens being picked off one by one. :rant

Hi,

I'm new to BYC and chickens. I just got two pullets. They are in a smallish coop with an 8 X 4 X 4 foot run. I live in the city with a medium to small size yard enclosed by 5 foot wood fence. I have lots of vegetation bordering my yard and would love to let my chickens roam around in it. What are the odds that they will fly over the fence? Should I clip their wings? Or wait for them to get bigger, (presuming that more weight to them will keep them a little more grounded)? Thanks for any help. I haven't told my neighbors about our chickens (though I'm sure they know by now) and I'd hate to be seen chasing my chickens all over the neighborhood!
