Three breeds of chickens and four different flocks with chickens that would not have learned this behavior from each other ...
The chickens love the carport. Specifically our door. Right now, there are seven young (almost laying) Barred Rocks parked on the ramp right in front of the door...
Our Barred Rocks will be six months old the end of August. Out of 11, we have one boy and 10 pullets. We get six eggs every day. So, does anyone know why four are not (apparently) laying? All of them are in a Lowe's shed (with doggie door to a run) at night and free range all day long. Some...
Ok, well, I guess it is what it is. I'm not sure what feathers people are looking for (in the full body shot), but all of the birds are just at five months of age. They were supposed to be all Barred Rocks, but I guess this one could have the feather coloration but be part something else...
Guess who did a crow this morning (well, it was a pitiful strangled half of a crow but still)?? Is it a very late developing male (as far as feathers/spurs are concerned)???
Thank you all for the help. I didn't know about POL. I do know we have at least one pullet laying (she wanted to lay when I was cleaning the coop, so I had to move out of the way and wait!) who does not have the huge comb like this one. I'm not sure how many pullets are laying. So far, the...
My husband picked them up at Tractor Supply. He called me at work. The store had several breeds (I can't remember now what they had - just getting excited over the Barred Rock choice).
Sounds like many of you are voting for roo. I passed on your full body picture request, but, of course, when I tried to get a full body picture, the roo/hen started sitting, walking away, etc etc. What a time to get camera shy! So, here is the best I could get below ...
So, what...
We purchased Barred Rock chicks that were sold to us as a pure female run. I am not sure about this one though. All of our Barreds are about five months old and are starting to lay. This one seems to have a super large comb for being a female. I haven't heard him/her crow and don't see...
Ohhhhh, I didn't realize that was possible. I am a new chicken person. We started by buying six month old pullets. Our most recent batch were a few weeks old, and we kept them in the chicken/rabbit hutch until they got old enough to integrate into the real coop.
Thank you, they are hysterical in general. I feel like the Pied Piper when I let them out because they follow me all the way to the house. They also LOVE the Kubota tractor, and I have to go VERY ..... sl owwwwww llllyyyyy when I get around their favorite tree. They come out near the tractor...
I have a real hen box and two banker boxes (I had hens - no longer with us - that would lay in these) in the Lowe's shed (8x8x8) we are using as a coop. The Barreds (we have 11 hens) roost on the shelf in the coop. I found one egg two days ago near one of the boxes. So, I took a yellow ball...
We love our Barred Rocks. We own eleven pullets (who I guess are almost hens terminology wise?) that are just reaching five months. We, of course, spoil them rotten, and they love following us around. One of their favorite activities is sitting on the top step - the one that is in the carport...
