Can free-range chickens learn to stay in a coop?

We have 7 chickens. They are basically free-range and roost in our barn at night. Our neighbor has started to complain that the chickens are going to his house every day (it's basically next to my barn) and tearing up his landscape. And we want them to roost outside of the barn, so we are...

Older hens being aggressive towards new pullets - help!

My flock consisted of 1 Americana hen, 2 Bantie hens and 1 Bantie rooster. My chickens live in a stall in our barn. About a month ago I bought 8 pullets that were 5-6 weeks old. I kept them in a dog crate in the stall, letting them out during the day when the others were free ranging and...

Adding pullets to an existing flock?

    Laying eggs with no shell?

My hens have just started to lay. So we're getting eggs sporadically. Yesterday and today I've found an egg that has no shell. It looks perfectly normal except it's just got a leathery membrane instead of a shell. Inside it is a perfect egg. I'm assuming it is one of the Rhode Island Reds...

Hens are getting aggressive! What do I do?

My hens have just started laying this last week. We've handled them in the past, but they really don't like it much. Well this week they have gotten a bit aggressive. Pecking at our legs/feet as we walk around the barn. It's like they KNOW we we are picking up their eggs and they are mad...

How do I know if an egg is fertilized?

We have 7 hens and 1 Rooster. The hens have just started to lay and I'm not sure how to tell if the eggs have been fertilized or not. We're picking them up every day (making babies is not our goal). We've cracked open two eggs and they both looked like normal eggs.

    Chickens heading back to coop

We bought our chickens 2 weeks ago. There are 7 pullets and 1 rooster. Have they been in the coop long enough to be let out? One did escape and my husband found her outside the coop looking in. So he was able to catch her and put her back in.
