Meal worm farming in deep litter in coop?

The chickens wouldn't be in there all summer to eat the worms so maybe they could just multiply. As far as grain, there is alot of hay with seed heads in there and I could probably dump some old sort of grain from storage in the bedding or even just buy a bag of some sort of meal. I will start...

    4-5 hens + rooster?

Beautiful birds. If I accidently end up with a rooster when I buy my pullets I'll just see how it goes with him. Probably just end up selling him. I do miss hearing a rooster crow though. Thanx for the answers.

    4-5 hens + rooster?

I've always kept larger flocks, but this spring I'd like to only have 4-5 barred rock hens. I've heard you have to keep at least 10 hens to have a rooster or he would bother them too much. I'd really like a rooster, but I want my hens to look nice without alot of missing feathers. I'm going...

Meal worm farming in deep litter in coop?

I've been reading quite a lot about meal worm farming. In the summer my hens are out in a chicken tractor and in the winter in their coop. When I take the hens out in the spring could I sprinkle a bunch of meal worms around in the deep litter bedding and let them grow and reproduce in there...

Question to those that feed their chickens eggshells back to their chickens.

I have a scrap bucket I take to my chickens every night. As I use eggs I just break the shells up small with my fingers and add them to everything else in the scrap bucket.

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

8 eggs today from 14 hens. I think I have some free loaders in there but not too bad since I stopped giving supplemental light.

Bedding for nesting box!@#$%^&*()(**^%## please help

It might help them stay warm, but you'll have to replace or add a lot of bedding to keep the eggs from getting poopy. If I put too much nesting material in the boxes my layers just scoop it out easier. For nesting material I use old hay or shredded office paper.

    square cattle panel coop?

Quote: I thought cattle panels would be stiff enough to not need posts. I can see I'm going to need to rethink this though. I wanted to move it every day so I could still have pastured eggs without the hens getting into so much trouble with the garden and neighboring farm fields (and my...

    square cattle panel coop?

I've been thinking about trying to build a square moveable coop using four 4 ft X 16 ft cattle panels lined with chicken wire. I may also have a chicken wire skirt around the bottom to deter digging by predators. There will be a tarp across the entire top and the back and part of the sides...

    hay for chickens?

I've read that Joel Salatin feeds his chickens hay in the winter. Sounded good, but can't get mine to eat it and I've tried grass and alfalfa. Since they freerange in the warmer months I thought they'd really go for it. I've even tried pouring their layer mash on it. They just scratch it...
